Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have released a joint statement on the Xbox Wire Blog about responsible gaming. In an article titled ‘Our Shared Commitment to Safer Gaming’ the 'big three' show a united front.
In a somewhat unprecedented show of solidarity, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo have all lent their voices to an article promoting safer gaming.
Cooperation between ‘the big three’ in recent years has become more common. Friendly banter on social media and sincere congratulatory messages following successful console launches are now becoming standard.
We feel this is great for the industry and a progressive step. It certainly helps battle some of the gatekeeping and tribalism that is rife in the gaming community.
But more importantly, it opens the door for more meaningful collaborations such as cross-platform gaming. So, Microsoft, Nintendo, and PlayStation all being on the same page is can only be a good thing.
On this occasion though, each is keen to express their shared commitment to safer gaming. While the article is penned by Dave McCarthy; the Corporate Vice President of Xbox, its sentiments are that of all three major gaming giants.
“Our Shared Commitment to Safer Gaming”
“At Xbox, we are aligned with both Nintendo, on behalf of the community of Nintendo Switch players, and PlayStation in our belief that protecting players online requires a multidisciplinary approach. One that combines the benefits of advanced technology, a supportive community, and skilled human oversight”
We can accomplish more when we work toward the same goal, and so we will each continue investing in, evolving, and amplifying our approaches to user safety. As we continue this work, we will prioritize protecting the safety of our players, especially those most vulnerable.”
We think safer gaming is a worthy cause and commend all three companies for standing with their competitors to promote it.
But as gaming evolves, each of the big three could all offer very different products/services. And an alliance between the three could lead to some truly revolutionary ideas.
