A new report has detailed exactly how much money Microsoft makes from its Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, and it’s in the billions.
Microsoft has made a series of purchases recently, including Activision Blizzard and Bethesda. This has led many to wonder how they’re actually affording it all.
Well, thanks to the ongoing buyout of Activision Blizzard, information directly relating to how much money Game Pass makes has been divulged.
How Much Money Does Xbox Game Pass Make?
Xbox Game Pass generated $2.9 billion USD in revenue across the fiscal year ending in January 2021.
This is according to Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), which is one of the many regulators that have approved Microsoft’s buyout of Activision Blizzard.
Typically, Microsoft doesn’t divulge information about its finances and has kept Game Pass’ earnings close to its chest.
However, initially spotted by TweakTown, CADE released a document detailing their thought process on their approval, which included information regarding Microsoft’s revenue.

The revenue generated from Game Pass accounted for nearly 30% of all of the money Xbox made from games and services. This is no surprise considering the great array of titles available on Game Pass right now.
Meanwhile, when it comes to Xbox’s total revenue – which was $16.28 billion in the fiscal year ending in January 2021 – Game Pass makes up 18% of total sales.
Of course, this is purely from the fiscal year ending in January 2021, and will therefore be different in the following years. Regardless, it gives a good indication of how much money the service makes.
In January 2021, Microsoft reported they had a whopping 18 million Game Pass subscribers. This has since risen to 25 million, meaning the total revenue of the next fiscal year will be much greater.
It is of course worth noting that this information doesn’t take into consideration PC Game Pass. The amount of generated revenue will be even greater as a result.

What’s more, as some great titles have come to Game Pass recently, the number of subscribers will surely continue to rise. Here are the most-played games on Xbox Game Pass right now:
- Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
- Chivalry 2
- Grounded
- Minecraft
- Forza Horizon 5
- Forza Horizon 4
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
- Halo Infinite
- Sea of Thieves
- MLB The Show 22
- Microsoft Flight Simulator
- Ark: Ultimate Survivor Edition

- Mortal Kombat 11
