Despite its growing pains, Warzone still remains one of the most prominent battle royales in gaming. With Modern Warfare 3 around the corner, many players are wondering if the mode will go through any substantial changes.

Most players believe that the next logical step for Call of Duty to take the franchise is to launch Warzone 3. However, is that really likely?

In this article, we will examine the timelines between Warzone and Warzone 2, where the battle royale currently stands, and what we know about MW3 Warzone.

Will There be a COD Warzone 3?

The next major iteration of Warzone will likely release in the future, but it won’t be called Warzone 3. We are not likely to see it anytime soon, either.

Activision has not revealed any information regarding ‘Warzone 3’, but we won’t see it with the release of COD 2023 MW3.

Activision only just recently reverted the Warzone 2.0 name back to just ‘Warzone’. This is a clear strategic indicator from the company that this iteration of Warzone is here to stay for a while.

It wouldn’t fit into the current timeline that Warzone has had with its past releases. However, leaks have suggested that there is a new Warzone map coming alongside Modern Warfare 3.

To get an idea of why it’s unlikely to see ‘Warzone 3’ so soon after Warzone 2, you need to understand the timeline of the original Warzone.

The original Warzone was released with Verdansk, and it quickly became a favorite among battle royale players. It combined what everyone loved about Call of Duty with the uncertainty and excitement of battle royales.

Warzone 3 Speculation

Timeline of Warzone:

  • Warzone – March 11, 2020
  • Rebirth Island – December 16th, 2020
  • Caldera – December 9, 2021
  • Fortune’s Keep – June 22, 2022
  • Warzone 2 – November 14, 2022
  • Ashika Island – February 15, 2023
  • Vondel – June 14, 2023

Following the timeline, Call of Duty didn’t overhaul its battle royale until 2 1/2 years after the original Warzone’s release date.

During the last few months leading up to that, Warzone Caldera had suffered through quite a few seasons where players were unhappy, and its player base was constantly on the decline.

Warzone 2 sort of came in to revitalize the battle royale and take it in a new direction. Unfortunately, Warzone 2 was also released to heavy criticism. Players felt that it changed too many gameplay aspects that they enjoyed in Warzone.

Call of Duty ended up reverting a lot of the changes to Warzone 2 to more closely resemble the original Warzone. Eventually, Activision announced that Warzone 2 would rebrand into Warzone.

Because of its return to just Warzone, it is highly unlikely that Activision plans to release Warzone 3 in the future.

Returning to the timeline, it is much more likely that we will see something similar to Caldera in terms of expansion size, and Warzone MW3 introduces a new main battle royale map to replace Al Mazrah.

Is There a Warzone 3?

No, there is currently no Warzone 3. Some players believe that MW3 Warzone will revolutionize the battle royale once again, but it’s far more likely Activision will continue to build on what they have.

The current version of Warzone is only in its fifth season and has had less than a year to develop properly. It is likely that Activision will work to expand its current battle royale rather than try to create a sequel.
