Will the next installment of the Call of Duty series, Black Ops 6, release on the last-gen PS4 and Xbox One in addition to current-gen consoles?
It’s been over 10 years since the PS4 and Xbox One were released, but these consoles are still being supported. This is despite the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X fast approaching the midpoint of their life cycles.
However, last-gen support is bound to end soon as the majority of gamers upgrade to current-gen hardware.
But will Black Ops 6 come to both current and last-gen hardware? Or is the series finally ready to leave the PS4 and Xbox One behind?
Will Black Ops 6 Be on PS4?
Yes, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will release on PS4 consoles when it arrives on October 25, 2024.
Activision has confirmed that PS4 players will be able to play the game without upgrading their hardware to a PS5.
Players can purchase the Black Ops 6 Cross-Gen bundle to receive a copy of both the PS4 and PS5 version of the game, giving them access to the next-gen upgrade should they ever decide to purchase a PS5.
Will Black Ops 6 Be on Xbox One?
Yes, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will release on Xbox One consoles when it arrives on October 25, 2024.
In addition to being playable on Xbox Series X and S, the newest Call of Duty title will be fully playable on the older device.
Additionally, Game Pass subscribers on all Xbox platforms will be able to play the Call of Duty title, which is available at no extra charge as part of their membership.
Treyarch has already confirmed that Black Ops 6 will launch on Game Pass on day one, and subscribers will also get free access to the game’s Beta!
Surely It’s Time to Leave Last-Gen Behind?
We’ve seen many complaints about Black Ops 6 being held back by the power of the PS4 and Xbox One.
Some fans are understandably frustrated that we’re not getting a ‘next-gen’ Call of Duty over halfway into the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S’s lifespan.
Even though it may have limited Black Ops 6’s graphics, releasing the game on both current and last-gen consoles makes financial sense for Activision.
Even in 2024, slightly more gamers are playing on PS4 than PS5 each month, so releasing the game on both generations doubles its potential sales.
Of course, playing Black Ops 6 on current hardware will still give the best experience, as the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game will almost certainly have improved graphics and frame rate.
However, the PS4 and Xbox One versions should still run smoothly, but with less detail and a lower frame rate.
