The new Pokemon anime, Pokemon Horizons, is set to release later this year and bring with it an entirely new cast of characters, including the adorable Captain Pikachu.
However, while many have seen this captain’s hat-wearing ‘Mon flying an airship, many may not know just who he is.
Of course, before you learn about the new Pikachu, it might be worth discovering what happened to the original one and his iconic trainer Ash.
Who Is Captain Pikachu?
Captain Pikachu is the companion Pokemon of Friede and one of the main characters in Pokemon Horizons. Together, they lead the Pokemon research group, Rising Volt Tacklers.
Friede and Captain Pikachu are the allies of Pokemon Horizon’s dual protagonists, Roy and Liko. They will play a significant role in helping them throughout their adventure.
In a press release, Taito Okiura, the Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for The Pokemon Company International, spoke about bringing a new version of Pikachu into Pokemon Horizons.
“Pikachu has been synonymous with the Pokémon franchise,” Vice President Okiura commented. “We look forward to seeing this beloved Pokémon continue to have a significant presence in the animated series and remain an icon for the brand.”
It likely comes as no surprise to many that The Pokemon Company wants to keep the adorable and iconic Pikachu as the mascot of the Pokemon anime.

Are Pikachu and Captain Pikachu the Same?
No, Captain Pikachu is not the same Pikachu as Ash Ketchum’s iconic companion from the original Pokemon anime.
He is an entirely new character for Pokemon Horizons, as Ash and Pikachu have finally left the series. Well, for the time being, at least.
Hopefully, the cute ship captain’s hat and steely stare should be enough to distinguish this brand-new Pikachu.
