Which PS4 Games Will Be Getting A Free Upgrade On PS5?

Unlike the launch of last gen, there’s a real emphasis on backwards compatibility heading into this next console generation.

Sony has announced; that not only will the PS5 be able to play 99% of PS4 games, but some will also be getting a free upgrade on PS5.

This also goes beyond the expected jump to 4K too. Sony and various game developers are actively optimizing existing PS4 games to make them extra special on PS5.

In terms of exact changes, both Sony and the developers involved have been vague when it comes to some titles. But more transparent when it comes to others.

It’s likely not much will change in terms of gameplay (if anything at all). So, it’s more likely that the free upgrade on PS5 will involve the visuals of these games getting overhauled.

What Will The Free Upgrades On PS5 Entail?

The PS5 will support 8K gaming on newer, ultra-modern TVs, as well as support 60fps. Having features like this added to existing PS4 games will be a major benefit for them.

It will also bring them more in line with the newer PS5 titles, future-proofing them. Allowing them to hold their own against titles that have been natively designed to support 4K and 60fps.

Many of these games can already support 4K on PS4 Pro, but the offerings of the PS5 are quite different when 60fps and 8K are on the table.

60fps seems the most likely addition to be given to the games getting a free upgrade on PS5. 8K potential is less clear at this stage, as is the possibility of 120fps.

While native PS5 titles will probably receive this treatment as the PS5 enters its tenure, we’ll need to wait and see if this applies to older games. Such as the PS4 games getting a free upgrade on PS5.

Also, as we reported earlier this week. PS5 games which have been upgraded also won’t support PS4 save data.

Therefore, when deciding to either play a game on PS4 or PS5, make sure your plan falls in line with each title’s free upgrade on PS5 rules. This will prevent disappointment.

We’ll be sure to update this list as more games are added to it.
