Fortnite players have grown used to dropping into the battle royale with their friends through Duos, Trios, and Quads.
It is a staple of Fortnite, and very rarely do players go in Solo unless they’re looking to improve their skills for a tournament or their friends just weren’t available.
But now it seems like Fortnite is ready to vault one of these modes for good. Here is what’s going on with Trios on Fortnite.
Why Is Trios Mode Vaulted in Fortnite?
Epic Games decided to vault the Trios game mode in Fortnite for both Battle Royale and Zero Build with the V24.40 update.
The official Fortnite Status account announced this upcoming change alongside the V24.40 Blog Post.
UPDATE (May 31, 2023): Fortnite Trios is now back in non-ranked Battle Royale and Zero Build modes!
This means that players can only play Solos, Duos, and Quads with both game modes from now on. Epic Games did not specify exactly why this change happened. All we know is that the Trios mode is vaulted until further notice.
But it is possible that this change came about to improve the player base with the launch of Fortnite Ranked.
The original Trios mode was introduced as a Limited-Time Mode in 2019 and then as a permanent addition in 2021.
Lately, players have complained about the lack of real players in some lobbies. This would lead them to constantly run into bots that didn’t deliver the sort of gameplay experience Epic Games hoped for.
Due to this change, players must choose between Quads or Duos when playing with friends.
Likely, Quads will now see an increase in popularity since most players who would frequent Trios will now need to move to the larger group.

When Will Trios Come Back to Fortnite?
Currently, Epic Games has not revealed whether or not Trios mode will come back to Fortnite, nor any date where we might see it come back.
If Epic Games is looking to bring the player count back up for other modes, then it is likely that Trios will not return in the near future.
It is possible that we could see this mode return in a Limited Time Event in the future, though. That was how it was initially introduced into the series.
There is already speculation of another mode coming to Fortnite themed around the popular Godzilla IP.
