It’s almost reached MW3 and Warzone Season 1 Reloaded, yet Activision has still not said anything about SBMM!
Skill-based matchmaking is a very controversial topic for Call of Duty players. While the system intends to make COD more enjoyable by sorting everyone into lobbies of similarly skilled players, it has come under fire from a large portion of the community.
Regular complaints about SBMM include that it punishes players for being good or finishing high up the scoreboard or that matchmaking prioritizes SBMM over connection and ping.
Fan anger towards SBMM peaked in a recent Reddit AMA with Modern Warfare 3 developer Sledgehammer Games. Rather unsurprisingly, the studio was bombarded with questions about skill-based matchmaking.
While Sledgehammer did not address SBMM in the AMA, the wider Call of Duty team released a statement about it shortly after, but that did not reveal much. However, crucially, it confirmed that further details about SBMM would be shared “in the coming weeks after Season 1 launches”.
Despite this, fans are still waiting…
MW3 & Warzone Players Become Impatient Over SBMM Situation
A popular post on the Modern Warfare 3 subreddit points out that it has now been 40 days since the Call of Duty team mentioned it would address SBMM “soon”.
It’s fair to say that the fans in the replies expected the issues to be addressed much faster than this. However, without a clear time frame, a lengthy wait probably should have been expected.
Although, as MW3 and Warzone Season 1 Reloaded is fast approaching, now seems a likely time for Activision to share more about SBMM. Here’s when we predict the announcement will drop!
When Will Activision Talk About SBMM?
The most likely time for the Call of Duty team at Activision to release more information about SBMM is alongside the Season 1 Reloaded patch notes.
This is because it will contain plenty of information about what’s coming to MW3 and Warzone in that update, as well as over the next few weeks.
Season 1 Reloaded is scheduled to release on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. The patch notes for this update, therefore, should arrive the day before, or on January 17 itself.
While it is also possible that the SBMM discussion could be delayed beyond then, it would be very surprising if it didn’t arrive before Season 2 begins. If it takes that long, many will become even more annoyed about the situation!
Hopefully, the long-awaited statement about SBMM will arrive sooner rather than later. However, even if it does, don’t expect Skill-based matchmaking to go away any time soon!
