Autobuild is one of Link’s handiest new abilities in The Legend of Zelda: TOTK, but learning how to use it properly is essential!

In Tears of the Kingdom, Hyrule’s greatest hero has a handful of new powers to master in his quest to save Zelda. But not all of them are simple to use.

Learn to master Autobuild, however, and you’ll soon be zooming around the grassy plains (or even the sky islands) in style!

Not got TOTK’s best ability yet? Here’s where to get Autobuild in Tears of the Kingdom!

Zelda TOTK: How to Use Autobuild

To use Autobuild in The Legend of Zelda: TOTK, simply hold ZL and move the right analog stick to the purple hands icon in the bottom right of the selection wheel.

You’ll then be able to choose from a list of your previous builds, or saved schematics.

How to Use Autobuild in Tears of the Kingdom

Once you’ve selected what you want to build, move the template around and it will pick up required materials from the environment. Press A to complete the build and Autobuild will generate your template perfectly every time.

One of the biggest benefits of using the ability is that it can be used even if you’re missing the materials required.

Instead, Autobuild will exchange 3 Zonaite for each missing item – perfect for when you’re missing a key component! Bear in mind that items generated in this way will appear green and cannot be removed from your build without being destroyed.

We wouldn’t recommend Autobuilding a complex item without any materials present, unless you’re happy spending a large amount of Zonaite.

How to Save Creations in Autobuild

To save a creation you’ve made in Autobuild’s registry, all you have to do is build it once using Ultrahand. As soon as you’ve fused two items together, Autobuild will already save the item in its memory, allowing you to replicate it.

Autobuild History in Zelda TOTK

Press L with Autobuild selected to bring up the build menu, then scroll down to History. There, you’ll see your last 30 builds and, by pressing the Y button, you can save one as a Favorite.

Your Favorite Autobuild recipes will appear at the top of the list until unfavorited.

How to Get New Autobuild Recipes in Zelda: TOTK

Link can unlock new Autobuild recipes primarily from Yiga Clan camps that are scattered throughout The Depths. After defeating the Yiga Clan enemies in each base camp, that area’s chest will unlock and grant you a new Autobuild Schematic.

The recipe in question will usually be one for a new machine or vehicle that was being used at the base in question.

How to Get Autobuild Schematics

Several other Autobuild recipes are hidden throughout Hyrule, or given to Link throughout the TOTK story. For example, after receiving Autobuild from the Great Abandoned Central Mine, heading back to Robbie at Lookout Landing will grant you the Hot-Air Balloon Schematic.

Of course, you don’t actually need the recipe – you can put together an identical vehicle and save your creation whenever you choose!

But for those who struggle with creativity, Autobuild recipes could be an easy way to have fun with Tears of the Kingdom’s new building mechanics.
