Ubisoft’s Far Cry series is best known for immersing players in exotic environments and giving them the tools to wreak havoc on enemies and wild life. Far Cry 5 will be no different, although it may be slightly less exotic for those of us living in the States. The upcoming first-person shooter will take players to Hope County, a fictional county in rural Montana that is overrun by a fanatical cult. Find out everything we know about the Far Cry 5 Release Date, Trailer, Story Details and much more below.
The cult, known as The Project at Eden’s Gate, is led by Joseph Seed. Joseph is a good ol’ boy from a small town in the deep south of Georgia, who didn’t have much purpose until a Voice called out to him one morning.
The Voice told Joseph that a Great Collapse was on Earth’s horizon, and that he needed to save as many people as he could, whether they wanted his salvation or not. Joseph, The Father, welcomed the misfits that had been left behind by society, which led to the formation of The Project at Eden’s Gate.
Joseph has three siblings, known as The Heralds, each of whom presides over one of the three major areas of Hope County. The Heralds answer only to The Father, and do his bidding throughout the county by means of starvation, coercion, or baptisms, all in preparation of the Great Collapse. The Heralds also oversee the followers of The Project at Eden’s Gate, who are basically the foot-soldiers of the cult.
Those in Hope County that resist Joseph and The Project at Eden’s Gate are simply known as The Resistance, and they need the player’s help to succeed at dismantling the cult.
To help The Resistance, the player will have all kinds of vehicles and an arsenal at their disposal.
The vehicles in Far Cry 5 are about what you’d expect to see in rural Montana, ranging from hot rods, suped-up buggies, and lifted pick-up trucks, to tractors and flaming semi-trucks. Aerial vehicles also return in the form helicopters and hydroplanes.
Series veterans will recognize many of the weapons that can be found in Hope County, like the assault rifle, the SMG, or the sniper rifle. But there are also new weapons, like the slingshot, and a new mechanic that allows players to equip a melee weapon like a bat or a shovel.
Far Cry 5 Campaign & Gameplay
Along with the new melee ability, Far Cry 5 introduces many new or refined ideas and mechanics into the series.
Most notably is the Resistance Meter. Each region has a unique Resistance Meter that delivers feedback about the player’s effects on that region and its Herald. The more the player disrupts the cult activity in that region, the more the meter will fill. Once that region’s meter reaches its max, the player will have a showdown with the Herald of that region.
Because of the way the Resistance Meter works, Far Cry 5 has a non-linear campaign. This means that whether you’re playing alone or with an ally, the campaign can be played in whatever order you’d like.
And, whenever you feel like taking a break from the campaign, there’s no shortage of ways to spend your time. Hope County is full of recreational activities like hunting, fishing, or wingsuit gliding. The crafting system returns from previous installments and goes hand-in-hand with hunting and fishing.
One of the largest changes to the Far Cry formula is the intel system. Much to my disappointment, climbing to the top of towers is no longer the way of learning new information and unlocking the map. Instead, players will gain intel in a much more organic way, by exploring and talking with people.
Guns For Hire
Previous Far Cry games would allow the player to summon some friendly NPCs to assist you in your assaults, and Far Cry 5 seems to have perfected this feature.
Players have access to Guns For Hire, who are members of The Resistance that bring unique skills to the table, such as an expert sniper. Players also have access to Fangs For Hire, which is basically what players were able to do with animals in Far Cry Primal. Its a part of the Guns For Hire system and refers to different animal companions that the player can have.
Players can also play side-by-side their friends, a feature first seen in Far Cry 4.
Far Cry 5 Release Date
Far Cry 5 will give players a massive open world to explore, full of realistic NPCs, tons of activities, and an insane cult to dismantle. The game was initially scheduled for a February release, but was delayed to March 27, and will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
The Far Cry 5 Season Pass content has also already been announced, which will give players access to three unique adventures, as well as access to Far Cry 3 Classic.
The adventures included in the Season Pass are Dead Living Zombies, Hours of Darkness, and Lost on Mars.
Dead Living Zombies will pit players against hordes of zombies, Hours of Darkness will see players escape from behind Vietcong enemy lines, and Lost on Mars will take players to Mars to save the Earth from giant Martian spiders.
