The Last of Us TV Show Plot & Videogame Story Adaptation
The Last of Us HBO TV show’s plot covers events that occurred in the first game, following Joel, a smuggler, transporting Ellie as they travel across a parasitic fungus-infected USA on a mission that could change life as they know it.
However, the inclusion of original characters and changes in the original timeline will result in some shifts from the source material.
As well, there is a chance the show will cover events from The Last of Us Part II later on, according to The Holywood Reporter.
HBO’s official synopsis of the TV show adaptation of the Last of Us states:
The series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The Last of Us HBO Show vs. Videogame Differences
- Ellie’s mom, Anna Williams, will appear on the Last of Us TV show. In the video game, she is not present and is only mentioned on a couple of occasions.
- In the game, the Cordyceps outbreak starts in late September 2013, with the game’s main events taking place twenty years later in 2033. However, in the TV adaptation, the outbreak will occur in 2003, with the show’s main events happening in 2023.
- The TV show will add more information about how the outbreak originated, grounding its narratives much as possible in science. The game gives some insight into the origin of the mutated strain of Cordyceps but never goes into full details, leaving a lot to the imagination.
- Contagion via spores has been removed from the TV show. Instead, the Cordyceps infection will spread via tendrils.
