Nintendo plans to begin Switch Pro production this summer. The console will also feature a new OLED screen from Samsung.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the Nintendo Switch Pro is real and is on track for a holiday 2021 release.
Analysts previously speculated that Nintendo would unveil the console in early/mid-2021 for a Q4 release. However, Nintendo has repeatedly stated they are “focusing on existing Switch models for the foreseeable future.”
We’ve said before that the “foreseeable future” is arbitrary and open to interpretation. So while we’ve taken Switch Pro rumors with a grain of salt, we’ve not been convinced by Nintendo’s wishy-washy statements either.
However, the Bloomberg report claims that the rumors were correct, and Nintendo is indeed gearing up for a Switch Pro release in 2021. But that’s not all.
The report suggests that Switch Pro production will begin as early as June. Meaning that a formal reveal could be anytime now.
It could potentially be unveiled at E3 this year, after skipping last month’s mixed Nintendo Direct presentation.
What Else Do We Know About the Nintendo Switch Pro?
The report reveals that the Switch Pro will feature an improved screen with 7-inch, 720p display OLED panels. This makes it bigger than the current Switch screen, but not the 4K display many fans were hoping for.
However, it’s entirely possible that the Switch Pro will be capable of 4K when plugged into a TV or monitor. The report says Nintendo is creating this model to “propel [the] Switch against the Xbox [Series X] and PS5.”
Therefore, we feel 4K when docked is a safe bet. In fact, analysts Matthew Kanterman and Nathan Naidu of Bloomberg Intelligence said:
“The release of a more premium version of Nintendo’s Switch console with an OLED display and support for 4K graphics for the holiday 2021 selling season could drive the company’s sales above consensus for the fiscal year ending March 2022 and extend the life cycle of the Switch platform for many more years.”
The absence of a 4K screen may be for practical reasons, such as battery life, cost (manufacturing and for consumers), and functionality.
If this information is accurate, we’re a little disappointed that the Switch Pro (if that is its final name) won’t feature a 4K screen. But we understand the reasoning. We were hoping the Switch Pro may feature the 4K screens that many modern smartphones are adopting.
But it still could; we’ll need to wait and see.
What Games Could Come to The Switch Pro?
If these rumors turn out to be correct – and they may well do – you can expect the Switch Pro to feature all upcoming big-hitters.
We imagine Breath of The Wild 2 would be a potential launch title, with Pokemon Legends Arceus not far behind.
It’s an exciting time to be a Nintendo fan. We’d like to reiterate our belief that the Switch Pro is real; all evidence points to this. So even if this report turns out to be bogus, a Switch upgrade is in our future.
