Fortnite OG has completely removed swimming to truly return to the Battle Royale’s roots, but will the mechanic eventually resurface?
If you’re dropping into Fortnite OG (AKA Chapter 4 Season 5) this month, you’ll need to be aware that swimming is no longer possible.
And with that fact comes all-too-late realizations that water can no longer save you from falling either:
Reddit user RedXaos isn’t the first Fortnite fan to make this mistake this season, and we’d bet on them not being the last, either.
But we believe that it’s possible that swimming may return to Fortnite OG before long.
Why Is Swimming Gone?
The reason for the swimming mechanic’s removal is clear: Fortnite Chapter 1 didn’t have swimming in the game.
Since Epic Games aims to deliver an authentic return for the original Fortnite experience, it makes sense that swimming isn’t present.
That said, features like sprinting, mantling, sliding, and vaulting are all still in the game – all mechanics that weren’t present in Chapter 1.
Initially, dataminers seemed to indicate that the above features would be disabled too, but Fortnite seems to have changed its mind at the last second, perhaps after listening to player outcry.
It’s worth mentioning that there isn’t a lot of water on the Chapter 1 map at present. All rivers are ankle-deep, and the entirety of Loot Lake is traversable on foot.
However, Fortnite OG has added one special change to the iconic POI, in the form of ziplines to make the area accessible in Zero Build playlists.
Finally, back in Chapter 1, the island was entirely surrounded by water. Going out into the map’s ocean border would leave you defenseless by design, which isn’t necessarily the case when swimming is involved.
Why It Might Return
Although swimming is still unconfirmed for Fortnite OG, there’s a possibility that the mechanic could return as the island is set to race forward in time throughout the season.
Fortnite OG is only four weeks long, and each week we will be getting more features added that debuted in fan-favorite seasons.
For example, in the Fortnite OG gameplay trailer, we can see Planes, Ballers, Driftboards, and more. Swimming was introduced in Chapter 2 Season 1, so could it also see a return?
The bad news is that the only announced content coming to the game is from Chapter 1. So while it’s entirely possible that swimming could surface later in the season, we wouldn’t say it’s particularly likely.
However, if it doesn’t, you can be certain that the mechanic will be back in Chapter 5 when it launches this December!
