How Do Skills Work in Starfield?

All skills in Starfield are split across five categories: Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Tech. Each category has multiple skills attached to it, which can each be unlocked by spending skill points. You need to complete skill challenges to improve them further.

The five skill categories in Starfield are:

  • Physical
    • Improves health, stamina, and endurance
  • Social
    • More dialogue options and improves the capacity to persuade and negotiate with NPCs
  • Combat
    • Improves weapon proficiency and damage
  • Science
    • Improves medic and exploration abilities. Unlocks more research recipes and reduces crafting time
  • Tech
    • Boosts turret and droid damage, increases security abilities, and improves exploration and base building

Does Starfield Have a Skill Tree?

Starfield does not have a traditional Skill Tree and instead has a Tier system split across its five categories. All skills per category are split across 4 Tiers – you need to spend skill points and complete challenges to access higher Tiers.

For example, you need to have a certain number of skills in Tier 1 of the Tech Skills category to access Tier 2.

Additionally, all Starfield Skills have their own Skill Tree of sorts. Similar to previous Bethesda games, they will get better the more you use them and complete challenges associated with them.

As an example, here’s the Skill Tree for the “Security” skill in the Tech Skill category:

  • Rank 1: You can attempt to hack Advanced locks, and 2 auto attempts can be banked.
  • Rank 2: You can attempt to hack Expert locks, and 3 auto attempts can be banked. Rings now turn blue when the pick can be slotted.
  • Rank 3: You can attempt to hack Master-level locks, and 4 auto attempts can be banked.
  • Rank 4: Expend a digipick to eliminate keys that aren’t required to solve the puzzle. 5 auto attempts can be banked.

How to Level Up In Starfield

You can level up in Starfield by completing missions, defeating enemies, and earning XP. When you level up, you’ll gain a skill point that you can use to unlock a skill of your choice.

When creating your character, you’ll have the option to pick a background. This immediately unlocks three starting abilities – some will unlock Rank 1 skill abilities within a particular category.

To rank up your skills normally, you’ll need to complete specific challenges that are usually related to completing in-game activities related to that skill. Each skill has four ranks.

For example, the the “Security” skill in the Tech Skill category can be upgraded four times. Below, you will see that you can upgrade to Rank 2 by picking a total of five locks:
