During the Echoes of the Past faction quest for the Crimson Fleet, you are presented with an interesting choice – should you tell Delgado that Mathis helped you in your search for Kryx’s Legacy?

As another recruit for the Crimson Fleet, Mathis Castillo joins you in finding out about Kryx’s long-lost treasure.

It’s a way of proving your worth to become a fully-fledged member of the Fleet. Mathis later asks you to help kill Delgado and sell what you find to the Fleet’s second-in-command, Naeva.

He later goes back on this plot and wants you to put in a good word with Delgado.

Below we go over all the outcomes of each choice, including all possible rewards and consequences.

Should You Help Mathis in Echoes of the Past?

You are free to choose to either help Mathis or not in Echoes of the Past. Quest Progress and rewards won’t be affected.

However, choosing not to help Mathis will result in him being immediately kicked out of the Crimson Fleet. You will also be locked out of recruiting him as a companion in the future.

Whichever option you choose, you will receive the following rewards for completing Echoes of the Past:

  • 100 XP
  • 20,000 Credits
  • Keelhauler – Legendary Pistol
  • UC Prison Shuttle – Ship

Despite gaining the same rewards, each choice will impact Mathis’ position in the Fleet and how he views you going forward.

What Happens If You Tell Delgado That Mathis Helped in Echoes of the Past?

If you tell Delgado over the intercom that Mathis helped in Echoes of the Past, Mathis will be accepted as an official member of the Crimson Fleet. He will also be a recruitable companion that you can have as part of your crew on your ship.

When you return to Delgado on the Key at the end of Echoes of the Past, he’ll mention that he considered your comments about Mathis. He then allows him to be a fully-fledged member of the Crimson Fleet.

How To Recruit Mathis As a Companion in Starfield

If you choose to put in a good word for Mathis to Delgado in Echoes of the Past, you have the option to recruit him after the Crimson Fleet faction questline wraps up.

You must choose to side with the Crimson Fleet to hand over Kryx’s Legacy to Delgado in the Eye of the Storm quest for this to happen.

At the end of the Eye of the Storm Crimson Fleet faction quest, you need to either side with the UC Sysdef or the Crimson Fleet. Siding with the Fleet will open up the possibility of recruiting Mathis onto your ship and as a companion in Starfield.

After completing the Crimson Fleet questline, you can find Mathis at the Key’s command quarters, ready to be recruited.

What Happens If You Tell Delgado That Mathis Didn’t Help in Echoes of the Past?

If you choose to tell Delgado that Mathis didn’t help you over the intercom in Echoes of the Past, Mathis will not be accepted as a member of the Crimson Fleet. He will also be angry with you and later attacks you in his ship.

When you return to Delgado at the end of Echoes of the Past, he’ll mention how Mathis won’t be joining the Crimson Fleet.

When you head over to speak to Mathis at the Nova bar, he expresses his anger at your betrayal and vows to take revenge.

It’s important to note, that even though Mathis threatens you here, you should refrain from attacking him at this point. This is because the rest of the Crimson Fleet will see it as an attack against the Faction and will retaliate.

Later in your playthrough, Mathis attacks your ship after you make a jump to another star system in space. There doesn’t seem to be a specific system where he does this. It appears to occur when you make any space jump after a certain period.

He follows through in his plot for revenge and ambushes you in his ship, the Blind Bet, with several other ships.

Defeating them all will finally bring Mathis’ story to a close in Starfield.
