In Starfield’s quest “High Price to Pay,” players must decide between protecting the Artifacts or jetting off to the Eye to help their companions as Starborn’s Hunter arrives to attack you.
Whatever option you choose will significantly impact the story, so it is quite a big decision, and we are here to guide you on what will happen for each option.
However, do note that the rest of this article will contain spoilers for the Starfield story. Let’s dive in and discuss what happens for each choice.
What Happens If I Defend the Lodge in Starfield’s High Price to Pay Quest?
If players decide to stay and defend the Lodge, the Hunter will arrive as you are packing up the Artifacts.
Players will discover that the Hunter cannot be killed, so they must run through underground tunnels to reach their ship and travel to the Eye.

Before making your way to the Eye, the Hunter will appear in his ship, the Scorpius, and tell you to ‘Keep collecting the Artifacts. We will meet again soon.”
He will also award you with a weapon, the “Unrestrained Vengeance,” and tell you to keep collecting the Artifacts. Then, you will head to the Eye to check on your companions.
Unfortunately, upon arrival, your Constellation companions Vladimir, Cora, and any three of the following have been attacked:
- Sam
- Sarah
- Andreja
- Barrett
In this scenario, one of the four listed above will die. We have found that this will be the character with the highest affinity towards you.

What Happens If I Go to the Eye in Starfield’s High Price to Pay Quest?
If players decide to head to the Eye, upon arrival, you will discover that Vladimir, Cora, and any three of the following have been attacked:
- Sam
- Sarah
- Andreja
- Barrett
However, in this scenario, everyone is wounded, but no one is killed. With no sign of the enemy, players will head back to the Lodge.

When you arrive back at the Lodge, the remaining member on the list above that was not on the Eye will be found dead in a pool of blood.
We have found this to be the character with the second-highest affinity towards you. In our case, this was Barrett.

From here, you find Noel in the basement with the Artifacts. When you interact with her, the Hunter appears, and with enough damage, he will disappear.
However, he keeps popping up as you run through the Well towards your ship to take off. After taking off, you run into a ship named the Scorpius.
This is the Hunter’s ship, and as a reward for beating him, he will provide you with a weapon named “Unrestrained Vengeance”and tell you to keep collecting the Artifacts.

Which Option Should I Pick in Starfield’s High Price to Pay?
The choice between heading to the Eye or defending the Lodge ultimately depends on which character you want to stick around, as one will die either way.
Either the character you have the most or second most affinity will die. There’s no method to assess the affinity of each of the four characters towards you during the mission.
So if your goal is to save a specific character’s life, your decision on whether to remain or head for the Eye will depend on your recollection of the characters with whom you’ve had the most favorable interactions with.
