The biggest announcement of the Nintendo Direct is here, and Nintendo saved the best until last with Splatoon 3.
One of Nintendo's most successful new IPs in recent history, Splatoon is a series that brings the hype. The popular shooter uses incredible ink-based mechanics for a fresh take on the third-person shooter franchise.
If you're not familiar with the series, Splatoon games feature Kid/Squid hybrids that can traverse the environments with ease, thanks to the ability to swim in ink.
Players can paint walls and floors with their ink-based weaponry, and then swim through it to get the drop on their opponents. Of course, the game also features combat between the Inklings, but a big focus of the Multiplayer is about coating the majority of the stage in your team's ink color.
And now, there's even more Splatoon action to be had, with the announcement of Splatoon 3. It wasn't the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remake reveal we thought it'd be, but this is just as exciting.
Splatoon 3 Trailer Unveiled at February Nintendo Direct
When today's Nintendo Direct announced that there was one more important announcement, fans felt their hearts beat out of their chests. And Nintendo didn't disappoint, dropping a shock Splatoon 3 unveiling.
The trailer was one of the few things not spoiled early in a detailed Reddit leak, and we're so glad it wasn't. As an insane number of Nintendo fans tuned into the Direct early, we were hoping for a major reveal.
And we got it.
The reveal trailer kicks off with a post-apocalyptic wasteland, where a small hooded figure can be seen. This is quickly revealed to be an Inkling, one of Splatoon's iconic soldiers.
After customizing their Inkling and their Little Buddy companion, the squid/human hybrid heads off into the Splatlands, in order to catch a train.
The Inkling then arrives in the new city, Splatsville, an area filled with battle-hardened Inklings and Octolings.
According to Nintendo, new weapons, moves, and more await us in Splatoon 3.
Splatoon 3 is releasing in 2022, so it'll be a while before we learn more. In the meantime, you can play as Inklings in Super Smash Bros alongside the new DLC fighters also announced.
We certainly didn't have Splatoon 3 in our list of Nintendo Direct predictions - did you?
