Xbox Game Pass has been a turning point for gaming everywhere, and now it seems that Sony is going to hit back at Microsoft’s success.
Since its launch back in 2017, Xbox Game Pass has been turning more heads with every passing month. For a monthly fee, gamers can indulge in their fill of new and old titles, whether they play on PC or Xbox consoles.
As of January 2021, Xbox Game Pass has over 18 million subscribers, with hundreds of games available to play. The push for a subscription-based gaming service over traditional sales was certainly a risk, but it looks like it’s paying off for Microsoft.
That’s not to say that the company isn’t also spending a huge amount on Game Pass, however. After all, Microsoft shells out a significant lump sum to each third-party game on Xbox’s subscription service.
And the Microsoft acquisition of Bethesda was far from a cheap one too. But now, PlayStation may have a Game Pass of its own on the way.
PlayStation’s Game Pass would be a good place to put the upcoming Last of Us PS5 Remake and Uncharted game!
PlayStation to Offer ‘Counterpunch’ to Xbox Game Pass
In a new video from God of War creator David Jaffe, the industry insider reveals that Xbox Game Pass will soon get ‘a counterpunch’ from PlayStation.
Despite multiple comments from Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan about a subscription model not being viable for PlayStation, things might all change very soon.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Sony having an ace up its sleeve to counter Game Pass. And it seems that a reveal is growing nearer.
“I’ve said time and again that people who are writing Jim Ryan’s obituary are way premature”, claims Jaffe in a new video on his YouTube channel. “We had the guy on the show yesterday that had made the petition to fire Jim Ryan and I was like, ‘dude, that’s way premature’ because Jim Ryan doesn’t owe anybody, Sony doesn’t owe anybody, the truth about what’s coming and what their counterpunch to Game Pass is.”
The God of War creator goes on to confirm that he’s got word that a response to Xbox is coming. And despite not being as active in the industry any longer, Jaffe has word from those at Sony about an upcoming counter.
It looks as though we won’t have to wait long to see Sony’s counter to Xbox Game Pass. But let’s just hope it’s not as disappointing as PS Now, Sony’s current subscription service.
Microsoft is really nailing the model so far, just look at the best games currently available on Xbox Game Pass. Plus, with Xbox’s What’s Next in Gaming event just around the corner, we’ll likely hear about even more improvements coming in future.
And with 20 new games coming to Xbox Game Pass very soon, there’s even more to enjoy on the service.
