Sony Release Details From Second PS5 Firmware Update

The PS5 has now received its second – all-important – firmware update. Various bugs and problems have been reported since the console was released. Will the second PS5 firmware update fix them all?

A new update will greet PS5 owners who log into their console today. It’s also probably one of the most essential updates the PS5 will ever receive.

Here’s why: The first patch, also known as the day one patch, offered basic updates that needed adding once the PS5, and all its many intricate systems, went live.

Day one patches are often notoriously large, but the PS5’s was relatively meager by usual standards. But soon, the errors and bugs started appearing.

PS5 Day One System Software Update

To be fair to Sony, this is normal. And credit where credit is due for them jumping on these problems and fixing them in a timely fashion.

It looks like fans who reported problems with the PS5’s rest mode were correct. A fix for rest mode has been included in the patch notes.

Although it doesn’t mention every issue caused by this bug, which were widespread and varied. It related to much more than simply not charging controllers.

If this second PS5 firmware update fixes all the reported problems with rest mode, then we’ll be relieved. But currently we're unsure if this is the case - we very much hope it is.

Here Are the Second PS5 Firmware Update Notes in Full:

Version 20.02-02.26.00

  • This system software update improves system performance.
  • An issue where installed disc versions of games were sometimes deleted was resolved.
  • An issue that prevented the PS5 wireless controller from being charged while in rest mode when connected to the PS5's front side USB Type-A port using the USB cable included with some PS5 consoles was resolved.

Version 20.02-02.25.00

  • This system software update improves system performance.
  • An issue where users couldn't download games because only the "Queued for Download" or "View Details" option was displayed was resolved. If you encounter this issue, update the system software to the latest version, and then try starting your PS5 in safe mode to rebuild the database.

So it remains to be seen of this is an end to the PS5 Rest Mode Issues saga. We certainly hope that all the horror stories of Rest Mode bricking PS5 consoles will also be ended by the second PS5 firmware update.

PS5 Console Bricked in Rest Mode

This should be Sony’s priority as this point. We expect more patches to arrive in the coming weeks with more stability and performance improvements for the PS5. This will be especially true if the second PS5 firmware update fails to address all the issues that have been reported so far.

We’re very much hoping that the patch fixes all the other bugs and errors reported on PS5 since release. If not, we have some tips on how to resolve them until a further patch is added.

We’ll keep an eye on the community’s response to the update and bring you updates as they come. Until then, here are Sony’s official patch notes in full.
