Sony Confirms First PS5 Media Apps At Launch

As we know, there’s so much more to a modern games console than simply playing games. Today, consoles offer a range of extra media options, a trend set to continue now Sony has revealed the first few PS5 media apps.

Since the PS3, Sony consoles have aimed to be a ‘full entertainment hub’, facilitating a range of services that players would value. This means they aim to offer as many functions as possible to ensure the console sells well. And houses all their user’s entertainment needs in one place.

The PS4 took this even further, offering even more streaming services and media channels than the PS3. Since Sony released the PS4, the world has entered the ‘era of the app’, and the PS4 did well to adapt to this.

Sony Show Off The PS5 User Experience For The First Time

Streaming is gradually replacing traditional TV, and the age of physical media may also be going the way of the dinosaurs. However, many would argue that the death of physical media is greatly exaggerated.

The Era Of Apps And Streaming Services

The PS5 has been created with this era in mind, something that was patently clear from the recent PS5 User Experience video. Convenience and connectivity are now highly prioritized by Sony, so we expect this to be reflected through their media channels.

Today there are more streaming options than ever before. The phenomenon has permeated every industry, with music, gaming, TV, cinema, and even general communication adopting this approach.

We fully expect the PS5 to be the console of the streaming age. And the plethora PS5 media app available at launch only supports this theory.

The PS5 Media Apps list includes:
  • Apple TV
  • Disney
  • Netflix
  • Spotify
  • Twitch
  • YouTube
  • Amazon Prime Video
  • MyCanal
  • Hulu
  • Peacock

What Other PS5 Media Apps Might We See?

We also expect to see more PS5 media apps added to this list as time goes on, such as:

  • BBC iPlayer
  • WWE Network
  • UFC App
  • Fite TV
  • Plex
  • Vevo
  • HBO Now
  • Roku
  • Sky+
  • GoPro Channel
  • Crunchyroll
  • VRV

To name a few. Although this is by no means an exhaustive list, we also believe that more PS5 media apps more streaming services will appear in the near future. They too will likely call the PS5 home when that day comes.

The PS5’s list of official accessories is also rather telling, as each seems to be designed for this new era of digital media and streaming in mind.
