Sonia is a brand-new character introduced in The Legend of Zelda: TOTK, but who is the mysterious Queen of Hyrule?
Those Tears of the Kingdom players who have spent time gathering Dragon’s Tears will have caught at least a glimpse of Sonia.
Only through discovering what happened in Hyrule’s past will Link learn more about the co-founder of Hyrule. Here’s everything we know about Sonia in TOTK:
Who Is Sonia in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?
Sonia is the co-founder of the Hyrulian Kingdom, alongside her husband Rauru – a member of the Zonai people.
Before meeting Rauru, Sonia was a priestess that held the power over Time. She has longer ears than many Hylians, a fact that is notable as it is said that the race’s pointed ears are used to receive messages from the gods.

Interestingly, Zonai are actually said to be descendants of the gods, which makes Sonia’s marriage to Rauru feel very appropriate. Upon getting married, Sonia received a Secret Stone of the Zonai as a gift from her husband.
After a few years of ruling as Queen of Hyrule, Sonia came across a confused Zelda who traveled back in time. Sensing both the power of Time and Light in the young girl, Hyrule’s Queen believes her story immediately.
Sonia then begins to teach Zelda how to control her powers, to help her return to her own time.
However, one night a puppet of Ganondorf taking the form of Zelda is able to distract the Queen for long enough for the real Ganondorf to assassinate her.

Stealing her Secret Stone, Ganondorf then obtains the power to become the Demon King.
Zelda and Rauru escape with Sonia’s body, which is eventually buried in the Forgotten Temple with a Sundelion decorating its gravestone.
