PS5 Storage Upgrade Options Coming Summer 2021

By this summer, we’ll have more storage options on our PS5. Meaning we can have more games installed at one time – finally!

When the PS5’s 667.2 GB SSD space was revealed, many Sony fans aired their displeasure, arguing it wasn’t big enough. Despite it being as generous as it could be.

It’s a tough one because games are taking up more hard drive space these days. Meaning owners often need to make tough choices about what they keep installed.

Look at the size of the PS5 compared to the PS4, seriously. Just how big was this thing expected to be? There clearly needed to be some compromise.

Luckily that’s exactly what Sony did provide when they gave players the option to upgrade the storage if they so desire. This is an option many players were glad of once their SSD filled up with 4K games!

While we could argue this extra storage could have come with the console at launch, but not everybody needs that much space. And it would have driven the PS5’s price up even higher.

Many players already own the additional storage space and are ready to use it, waiting for the day they can put a second SSD in their PS5s.

Sony Will Update PS5 Storage Using A Firmware Update This Summer

According to a source that spoke to Bloomberg, Sony is gearing up for a firmware update this summer. This will finally allow players to pull the trigger on their extra SSD space and use it to install and play PS5 games from.

The PS5 even has an extra compartment where this additional storage space slots in. A very helpful feature from Sony – and one of the reasons why the console is so freaking huge!

According to the same source, a Sony spokesperson said, “As previously announced, we are working to enable M.2 SSD storage expansion for PlayStation 5. The timing has not been announced and details will be shared later.”

Finally.

We’re looking forward to having more of our favorite PS5 games installed at once. We’re not going to lie; having Warzone, Black Ops Cold War, and Modern Warfare installed at once hasn’t left room for much else!

In other PS5 news, here’s everything that was announced last night during Sony’s State of Play event.

Sony has also promised that more PS5 games will be coming to the PS Plus Library in the future. They will also continue to support free PS4 and PS5 games through PS Plus on a monthly basis.

In other Sony news, PlayStation’s Play At Home promotion will be returning in 2021 after it was successful in 2020. However, neither of these things got mentioned during tonight’s show.
