The Biggest PS4 & PS5 Games in 2023 & Beyond

It’s been another great year for gaming, with landmark releases like crowd and critic pleasers Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok, but now it’s time to look ahead at PlayStation releases in 2023.

As with any year, the games listed for a 2023 launch may be pushed back later in the year or delayed even further.

But long-awaited horror remakes, a certain soulslike Metroidvania, a gaming return to the wizarding world, and more are slated for 2023.

While not every release will come to PS5 and PS4, or even both console generations, there are tons of major launches scheduled for 2023.

One Piece: Odyssey

The popular manga and anime franchise, created by Eiichiro Oda, is getting a turn-based JRPG adaptation, developed by ILCA and releasing on January 13, 2023.

While not non-linear, the game has open areas to explore, dungeons to fight through, unique abilities for characters from the series to use out of combat, and more.

Forspoken

Developer Luminous Productions is releasing a real-time action role-playing game. It focuses on narrative, fluid movement, and magic-based combat systems launching on January 24, 2023.

The game follows Frey, a woman transported from New York City to the fantasy world of Althia. With the aid of magical powers, she must survive and find a way back.

Dead Space Remake

Dead Space, the ultra-gory action survival horror game, is returning after a long hiatus after Dead Space 3 with a remake of the original on January 27, 2023.

The classic horror title is getting a graphical overall, voice acting for the formerly silent protagonist Issac Clarke, no loading screens, and more.

Hogwarts Legacy

One of the most anticipated games of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy, is an action RPG where players choose their Hogwarts House and play as a student in the 1890s, releasing on February 10, 2023, on PS5.

Players can fully customize their character, learn and upgrade spells, brew potions, level up, and make friends with NPCs, and more in the full release.

Wanted: Dead

Developed by Soleil Ltd., Wanted: Dead is a stylish third-person shooter and beat-em-up where players fight as members of Hong Kong’s Zombie Unit, releasing February 14, 2023.

Players will uncover corporate conspiracies and fight hordes of enemies as the hardboiled cop Lt. Hannah Stone.

Wild Hearts

Like the Monster Hunter series, Wild Hearts is an action RPG where players must hunt and kill giant beasts, this time in a fantasy feudal Japan setting, releasing February 16, 2023.

Players traverse the world of Azuma with the aid of advanced ancient technologies. That technology can also serve as weapons in combination with more traditional combat techniques in developer Omega Force’s latest release.

Like a Dragon: Ishin

This remake is a spin-off of the Yakuza series and involves open-world beat-em-up RPG mechanics. Set in the late Edo period, Sega is bringing the previous Japan exclusive worldwide on February 17, 2023.

Like a Dragon: Ishin focuses on Yakuza members in the late 1800s unrelated to characters in the mainline series. The remake includes an additional campaign and a dungeon-crawling mode.

Atomic Heart

Atomic Heart, the futuristic soviet-dystopian FPS RPG horror game, has been wowing players in trailers for years, and developer Mundfish is finally releasing it on February 21, 2023.

The game focuses on melee weapons and gunplay and has a fair bit of scavenging and crafting systems to make and upgrade weapons and equipment.

Horizon Call of The Mountain

In this VR spin-off of the Horizon series, created by Guerilla Games, Call of the Mountain stars a new character but includes familiar faces like Aloy, and is releasing February 22, 2023.

In first person, you’ll fight, climb, and more using motion controls and traditional control methods. But combat arenas will be smaller so its unclear whether players will have the same freedom as the mainline games.

  • This will only be available on PS VR 2, which also requires a PS5 console.

Amnesia: The Bunker

Continuing the popular survival horror franchise, Amnesia: The Bunker, developed by Fractional games, has players exploring a semi-open world with more tools to fight back, releasing in March 2023.

Deep in the horrific trenches in World War One you play as the French soldier Henri Clément; with only a pistol, and flashlight you must outsmart reactive AI enemies and solve puzzles.

  • PS4 only (however, PS4 games will run on PS5 and can be bought on the PSN Store)

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Developed by Team Ninja of Ninja Gaiden and Nioh fame, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a linear soulslike action RPG in the vein of their previous work, releasing on March 3, 2023.

Players will choose between five classes with different playstyles and five “Divine Beasts” to help assist them in combat as they fight demons and monsters.

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse Remake

The next release in the classic survival horror franchise is a remake of the Japanese Wii exclusive releasing on March 9, 2023, by developer and publisher Koei Tecmo.

The game tasks players with capturing ghosts in photographs using the Camera Obscura in various haunted locations

Players control four different characters, each with their own locations to explore and storylines to experience.

Skull and Bones

Inspired by Assassins Black Flag, Skull and Bones is a tactics naval warfare game played in the third person where players take to the high seas as pirates, releasing March 9, 2023.

Developed by Ubisoft Singapore, the game is billed as a dual single-player experience and multiplayer live-service game with ongoing updates and in-game purchases.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

The sequel to developer Respawn’s action-adventure soulslike, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, sticks close to the original design and is releasing on March 17, 2023.

Taking place five years after the first game, players follow the original protagonist Cal Kestis as one of the few surviving Jedi after the Jedi genocide Order 66.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Rumored for years before release, the classic third-person action survival horror game is getting remade by Capcom with updated graphics, cutscenes, movement, and more on March 24, 2023.

Players once again must rescue the president’s daughter as Leon Kennedy, roundhouse-kicking ganados, and a plethora of other ghouls to get there.

  • Despite the trailer below, the game is releasing on PS4 & PS5.

Dead Island 2

Though not developed by Techland, the original creators, this sequel picks up where Dead Island Riptide left off, releasing on April 28, 2023, and developed by Dambuster Studios.

The open-world FPS melee game is set in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The zombie outbreak has spread to California, and players must craft weapons and items to fight back.

  • PS5 & PS4

Star Trek: Resurgence

Star Trek: Resurgence is a third-person narrative adventure game where you make choices, build relationships, and occasionally engage in combat and stealth, releasing in April 2023.

The game features two playable characters that you switch between and occur immediately after the Star Trek: The Next Generation movies.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Developed by Rocksteady Studios, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League takes place in the Batman Arkham series releasing May 26, 2023.

It is a third-person action-adventure game where players control the Suicide Squad and can switch between playable companions at any time in single-player or with four friends in co-op multiplayer.

After members of the Justice League are captured by the supervillain Brainiac, the Suicide Squad, made up of Arkham Asylum inmates, must save the members and the world.

Street Fighter 6

The iconic fighting-game franchise is now getting its sixth entry with several new characters, old favorites, and a new single-player campaign mode.

Street fighter 6’s combat system is based on the Drive Gauge, which can execute different battle techniques and moves when filled.

Diablo IV

Diablo IV will continue the loot-focused action RPG mechanics of the past games, releasing June 6, 2023, and developed by Blizzard Entertainment and Vicarious Visions.

It is being built partially as a live-service multiplayer game, with in-game transactions, consistent updates, and events, with the option of playing it as a more traditional single-player game as well.

Final Fantasy XVI

Square Enix’s latest entry into the Final Fantasy franchise continues the grimdark approach of Stranger than Paradise with soulslike combat and a semi-open world, releasing on June 22, 2023.

Player control Clive Rosenfield and a party of AI party members that change over time in a journey to satisfy his revenge.

Unannounced Release Dates or Months

Hollow Knight: Silksong

As the sequel to the smash indie-hit Hollow Knight, Silksong takes players on another metroidvania adventure with the series’ infamous soulslike combat.

This time, Developer Team Cherry has players control Hornet, who appeared in the previous game.

Payday 3

Payday, a co-op multiplayer heist FPS game, is getting a new sequel from developer Overkill Software and Starbreeze Studios.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Developed by Daedalic Entertainment, Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an action-adventure game starring Gollum following the events of The Hobbit before The Lord of the Rings.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

From developers Massive Entertainment, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has players journey across the Western Frontier as the Na’vi to push back the invading forces of the RDA.

Aliens: Dark Descent

Playing from a top-down perspective, Aliens: Dark Descent is a real-time strategy game set in the Alien franchise and developed by Tindalos Interactive.

Alan Wake 2

Not much is known about the sequel to the cult-classic survival horror game, but players should ready their flashlights and prepare for the next release in the franchise, developed by Remedy Entertainment.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Developer Insomniac is returning to the web-swinging open-world action-adventure game. This time, Peter Parker is joined by Miles Morales, picking up after the events of the first game and its expansion.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

As part two of the remake of Final Fantasy 7, Rebirth follows the first game’s events to continue the epic JRPG classic with real-time battle mechanics.

Judas

It has been years since the last Bioshock game. While Judas is not named such, developer Ghost Story Games, full of veterans of the series including Creative director Ken Levine, appears to follow the classic formula with as dark, twisted FPS with immersive sim elements.

Dragon’s Dogma II

Next to nothing is known about Dragon’s Dogma II other than Capcom is working on it, but given the first game, players can expect a difficult western-styled RPG.

Indiana Jones

The new MachineGames developed Indiana Jones game is expected to go along with the new movie.

Still, like Dragon’s Dogma, there is little information, but given their past work, it is like a third or first-person action-adventure title.

Death Stranding 2

Revealed at The Game, Awards, Death Stranding 2 features some characters from the last game but has not shown what players will be doing this time.
