PS5 and Xbox Series X Shortages Could Continue Until Summer 2021

A partner of both Sony and Microsoft believe the PS5, Xbox Series X/S stock shortage will continue until the second part of 2021.

While PS5 and Xbox Series X stock is still hard to come by; there has been some improvement in recent weeks. Both Sony and Microsoft have ramped up their production efforts to meet the demand.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently provided his thoughts on the Xbox Series X/S stock. And Sony expects to sell 18 million PS5 consoles in 2021.

But now, graphics card and chipset manufacturer, AMD, has chimed in with their view on the situation. While it initially sounds like bad news, it was always going to be the case.

We think the news is something the world already understood on some level. But now, we know there is light at the end of the console shortage tunnel.

Anyone who wants a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S will soon be able to own one. And it’s AMD’s update that gives us this hope.

AMD, who produces various components for both consoles, expect the PS5 and Xbox shortages will continue into the second half of 2021. This is because the company has to ship parts for all three consoles.

The company’s CEO Lisa Su told reporters for VGC that she expects there to be “some tightness” for the first half of 2021. However, she expects things will improve by summer.

Su said, “I think we’re getting great support from our manufacturing partners. The industry does need to increase the overall capacity levels and so we do see some tightness through the first half of the year, but there is added capacity in the second half."

What Does This Mean for The PS5, Xbox Series X Shortages?

While the internet has reacted to this news with a degree of frustration, as we said, we’d counter with some hope and optimism. This was always going to be the case; the PS5, Xbox shortage wasn’t ever going to be resolved overnight.

The pandemic, which is what caused the shortage, is still raging. However, worldwide vaccine distribution is also expected to reach its apex by summer.

Hopefully, this will allow companies like AMD to reach their targets and supply more parts to Sony and Microsoft as time goes on. While the shortage may continue until the second half of 2021, at least it will get progressively better.

Other reasons to be cheerful include the fact that increasing PS5 and Xbox Series X/S stock may be the key to defeating scalpers. Something that will take time to happen fully but is ultimately inevitable.

Microsoft themselves have confirmed as much in their latest comments, suggesting that the shortage will last for a few more months.
