Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Generation 9 of Pokemon, Scarlet & Violet!
Our next generation of Pokemon is here at last, and Nintendo intends to capitalize off the popularity of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. With the recent title being the second fastest-selling Nintendo Switch title of all time, it’s clear that fans are interested in Scarlet & Violet.
And after some lackluster Pokemon Legends: Arceus DLC just dropped, we bet Game Freak are focussing their efforts on the upcoming launch.
Already, we know a lot about the intriguing new generation and what it offers. And it’s certainly making its way into our list of the most anticipated Nintendo Switch games of 2022.
Everything We Know About Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
Scarlet & Violet Starter Pokemon
As usual, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet allows players to choose a Starter Pokemon to begin their adventure.
This time around, trainers will be picking from the Grass-Type cat Sprigatito, the Fire-Type crocodile Fuecoco, or the Water-Type duck Quaxly.

We don’t yet know anything about their evolutionary lines but more information will no doubt be coming soon.
Are Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Open World?
Yes, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are open-world Pokemon titles, just like Legends: Arceus. It seems that Game Freak is making the open-world aspect a big part of Gen 9.
Already, the developer is assuring players that trainers will be able to explore a beautiful open environment in their travels to become a Pokemon Master.
“Various towns blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders. You’ll be able to see the Pokémon of this region in the skies, in the seas, in the forests, on the streets—all over!”
Where Is Pokemon Scarlet & Violet’s Region & Setting?
Although we don’t yet know much about the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet region, it appears to have a setting resembling Spain or Portugal. The Starter Pokemon names and hints from the trailer all suggest a Spanish-theme.
The region features many beautiful biomes with Pokemon will be residing throughout. And of course, the game also features a full day/night cycle, judging by the reveal trailer.
Pokemon Gen 9 Release Date
So far, there’s no exact release date for Pokemon Generation 9, Scarlet and Violet. However, Nintendo is confirming that the game will release in ‘late 2022’ for Nintendo Switch systems.
Main Characters
While Pokemon Legends: Arceus had players stepping into the shoes of a slightly older trainer, Scarlet and Violet appear to be leaning younger.
Players will have the option of choosing from a male or female trainer, with the other likely becoming their rival in-game.

However, your outfit will vary depending on which version of the game you are playing.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Pre-Orders & Price
Right now, Nintendo is yet to reveal how much Scarlet & Violet will cost, or when pre-orders will go live. However, we can estimate that the game will retail at $60, going by past releases.
We’ll update this article as pricing and pre-order information becomes available.
Pokemon Battles in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
It appears that Pokemon battles are back in a big way in Scarlet and Violet. Unlike Legends: Arceus, which focussed on catching creatures over battling them, Gen 9 returns to the tried-and-true Pokemon formula.

Already, Game Freak is confirming that players will need to battle wild Pokemon to catch them once again. However, it doesn’t reveal whether stealth captures are still possible!
With the game resembling Sword and Shield just as much as it does Arceus, we expect Pokemon battles to be a big part of the experience once again.
New & Returning Pokemon in Scarlet & Violet
While we see a lot of familiar creatures in the game’s promotional images so far, it wouldn’t be a new generation with new Pokemon.
Unfortunately, Scarlet & Violet is yet to reveal any new creatures besides the Starter ‘mons. However, the likes of Pikachu, Lucario, Blissey, Meowth, and more are confirmed to make an appearance.
Are Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Multiplayer?
Right now, Nintendo isn’t confirming any multiplayer elements in Scarlet or Violet. However, given that the game is the new mainline entry in the franchise, we’re almost certain that multiplayer is coming to the game at launch.
