Egg Moves are a great way to truly customize each and every one of your Pokemon. It enables you to have complete control over each of their moves, which is perfect for competitive play.

Of course, before you get invested in the world of Egg Moves and Chain Breeding, you may want to learn how to get Eggs in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet first.

What Are Egg Moves in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet?

Egg Moves are moves that are passed down from one Pokemon to another through the breeding process in Scarlet and Violet.

It is a move that the new Pokemon (that is hatched from an egg) couldn’t learn normally. Usually, the inherited Egg Move comes from the male species involved in the breeding process.

Egg Moves are a great way to personalize your team. It essentially allows you to choose exactly which moves each Pokemon will have, especially if you do Chain Breeding.

What Is Chain Breeding in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet?

Chain Breeding is when players breed a Pokemon to inherit an Egg Move and then create a new Pokemon with that Pokemon so that it can learn the Egg Move.

You would use this process to give Egg Moves to Pokemon that cannot breed with the Pokemon that knows the move originally.

So, the process would go like this:

  • Pokemon A (who knows the Egg Move) + B create C.
  • C then inherits the Egg Move.
  • Pokemon C + D create E (who couldn’t breed with A) so that it can inherit the original Egg Move.

These chains can get extremely long, requiring multiple breeding attempts in order to create the perfect Pokemon. It can get really long if you want a Pokemon to inherit four unique Egg Move.

Chain breeding is a complicated process. However, once you get the hang of it, it can allow you to create the ultimate team. It is helpful for the competitive scene where you really need a unique advantage.

How to Get Egg Moves Using a Mirror Herb in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

You can pass down Egg Moves by giving a Pokemon that wants to learn Egg Moves a Mirror Herb and then having a picnic with it and the Pokemon that already know the move(s).

However, you’ll need to make sure that the Pokemon who is learning the move has spare move slot(s) by making it forget a move.

Pokemon can learn multiple Egg Moves this way from multiple Pokemon so long as those Pokemon only have that move equipped and the Pokemon learning the moves has enough empty move slots.
