As ever, there are two games coming out for the latest mainline Pokemon generation, Scarlet & Violet. And while it’s possible to buy both games in a 2-in-1 dualpack, most fans will probably only get their hands on a single copy.

With that in mind, which version of Gen 9 should you buy? And what are all of the differences between the two?

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Which Should I Buy?

For all those fans who are still undecided, there are a number of differences between Pokemon Scarlet & Violet that might sway your decision-making.

These include an ancient/future theme, version-exclusive Pokemon, your new legendary mount, and more. Here’s everything you need to know about each feature:

All Differences Between Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Past or Future Theme

Although the main story of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet won’t change much between versions, there will be some key differences. Most notably, Scarlet appears to be themed around the past, while Violet will be based around the future.

We don’t have any information on the game’s villains just yet, but chances are, they’ll be trying to alter the Paldea region based on one of these two themes.

And while the games will otherwise be very similar, expect some aesthetic changes with regards to either the past or future.

Koraidon or Miraidon

Tying in with the concept of past vs future, Pokemon Scarlet players will get the Legendary Pokemon Koraidon in-game. Meanwhile, Violet players will get access to Miraidon instead.

Make sure to pick the game that has the Legendary you like most, as you’ll be seeing it a lot. After all, players can ride, sail, or fly Koraidon and Miraidon around the open world for most of their adventure!

Of course, there are also some Pokemon that are specific to each version of Gen 9, in order to encourage trading. Here are all the version-exclusive Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet that we know about so far.

Professor Sada or Professor Turo

Throughout your adventures in the Paldea region, you’ll also encounter a different professor, depending on your game of choice. Scarlet fans will meet Professor Sada, while Violet owners will encounter Professor Turo instead.

Naranja Academy or Uva Academy

In the latest Pokemon Scarlet and Violet trailer, fans were introduced to the academies that they’ll be attending in-game. Although there’s not too much difference between the two, Scarlet users will be attending Naranja (Orange) Academy.

Violet players will instead attend Uva (Grape) Academy, and the two schools each have their own uniforms. If you can’t stand the orange shorts of Naranja Academy, perhaps you’d prefer Pokemon Violet.
