Pokemon GO players can Mega Evolve Charizard into X or Y – but which is best?
Pokemon GO’s recent Mega Moment event has introduced players to Mega Evolution! Trainers have been busy Mega Evolving their Pokemon, and have been faced with an interesting choice.
Most Pokemon only have one potential Mega Evolution – for example, the terrifyingly strong Mega Kangaskhan. However, Charizard is a special case, as it has two potential Mega Evolutions!
When players have enough Mega Energy, they can choose to obtain either Mega Charizard X, or Mega Charizard Y. The evolution you choose will require less Mega Energy in future, allowing you to Mega Evolve your Charizard more easily.
In this guide, we’ve broken down all the differences between Mega Charizard X and Y. If you can’t decide which version to evolve your Charizard into, we’ve got you covered!

Mega Charizard X vs Y Comparison Pokemon GO

As with all Mega Evolutions, when you Mega Evolve your Charizard, it is a temporary change. As a result, both Mega Charizard X and Y will learn the same moves.
Just like the original Charizard form, both Mega Evolutions are powerful Fire-types. They have access to the following moves:
- Fast Moves: Air Slash, Dragon Breath, Ember, Fire Spin, Wing Attack
- Charged Moves: Blast Burn, Dragon Claw, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Overheat
Our recommended moveset for Charizard depends on what form you choose to Mega Evolve it into. Let’s take a look at each Mega Evolution in detail!
Mega Charizard X Stats and Type

Mega Charizard X excited lots of Pokemon fans upon release. It changed Charizard’s typing to Fire / Dragon-type, allowing the fan-favorite ‘Mon to finally become a Dragon type!
While this typing change means Mega Charizard X is vulnerable to Ground-type moves, it can also deal more damage with its powerful Dragon-type moves. Our recommended moveset for Mega Charizard X is:
- Fast Move: Dragon Breath
- Charged Moves: Dragon Claw, Blast Burn
Please note that in order to teach your Charizard Dragon Breath or Blast Burn, you’ll need to get your hands on some Elite TMs. Check out our Alolan Geodude Community Day Guide to find out how to get some!
Mega Charizard X also has different stats to Mega Charizard Y. Here are Mega Charizard X’s stats!
- Max CP: 4353
- Attack: 273
- Defense: 213
- Stamina: 186
Mega Charizard Y Stats and Type

Unlike Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y does not change type when it Mega Evolves. This means that Mega Charizard Y retains Charizard’s Fire / Flying-type.
While this type change means Mega Charizard Y will deal less damage with its Dragon-type moves, it remains immune to Ground-type moves. Here’s our recommended moveset for Mega Charizard Y:
- Fast Move: Fire Spin
- Charged Moves: Blast Burn, Dragon Claw
As we mentioned previously, both Mega Charizards have different stats. Here’s Mega Charizard Y’s stats:
- Max CP: 5037
- Attack: 319
- Defense: 212
- Stamina: 186
Should I Choose Mega Charizard X or Y?

Because both Mega Charizard forms are terrifyingly strong, it’s hard to decide which to Mega Evolve into: Mega Charizard X, or Mega Charizard Y. We’ve put together a handy table to compare the differences between the two forms!
Mega Charizard X | Mega Charizard Y | |
Type | Fire / Dragon | Fire / Flying |
Max CP | 4353 | 5037 |
Attack | 273 | 319 |
Defense | 213 | 212 |
Stamina | 186 | 186 |
As the table shows, Mega Charizard Y has higher Max CP and Attack. This means that Mega Charizard Y is the better choice if you’re looking for an incredibly strong Fire-type attacker.
However, Mega Charizard X has its advantages, too. Using one in a raid will boost all your allies’ Dragon-type attacks, and it can deal more Dragon-type damage too!
All in all, both Mega Charizard X and Y are incredibly strong Pokemon in Pokemon GO. Which one you Mega Evolve your Charizard into depends entirely on your needs.
