Pokemon GO Developers Launching New Nintendo Game

The developer of Pokemon GO, Niantic Labs, is working on a new augmented reality game based on Nintendo properties – this time it’s Pikmin!

Pikmin 3 was one of the treasures of the Wii U. The game was ported to the Nintendo Switch last year, giving it a second chance to charm players with its unique gameplay.

The premise is simple you control an ever-expanding group of Pikmin creatures, leading them to safety and solving puzzles on a colorful alien planet.

The game often reminded us of Lemmings, but with more color and less death!

According to Nintendo’s official Twitter account, Niantic is now working on a new AR game based around the Pikmin franchise.

Most people will know Niantic from their work on the hugely successful Pokemon GO. A downloadable smartphone app that encourages players to leave the house and hunt Pokemon in real-time through augmented reality.

The rest is history; as we know Pokemon GO continues to be popular today. In fact, some people have actually broken quarantine restrictions to play the game!

How Would AR Pikmin Work?

If handled correctly, Pikmin would translate very well to an AR game. And who better to handle the task than Niantic?

The idea of going for a walk while being surrounded by a gaggle of fruit-carrying Pikmin could be rather fun.

There isn’t much in the way of details available at this point. Nintendo has only just announced the title, but we can hazard a guess at what an AR Pikmin game could entail.

Nintendo’s tweet also offers players the chance to pre-register for updates. We imagine this may lead to some early access or beta testing further down the line.

AR Pikmin, Pikmin GO, or whatever it ends up getting called will release later in 2021. Until then, check out Pikmin 3 on Nintendo Switch to see what all the fuss is about.

Pikmin 4 is also on the way, and it’s reasonable to assume it will offer some form of connectivity with its smartphone counterpart. – Like Pokemon GO does with Pokemon Let’s Go Pickachu/Eevee.

Pikmin are also rumored to be making an appearance at Super Mario World!

If you can’t wait you can always download Pokemon GO in the meantime. Remember, we’ve also got Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl to look forward to in 2021.

Not to mention Splatoon 3! Now there’s an AR game we could really get into!
