In an unsurprising turn of events, PlayStation Studios is acquiring Housemarque.
Returnal is one of the best PS5 games on the market to date, and now Housemarque is here to stay. If you’ve not had a chance to try out the developer’s hard-as-nails Roguelike title, it’s everything you’d want from a PS5 game.
Not only does it look and sound amazing, but Returnal’s gameplay loop is incredibly satisfying. What’s more, it makes better use of the next-gen DualSense controller than any other game so far (with the possible exception of Astro’s Playroom).
Now, Sony is locking in the development team for more exclusives in the near future. And with over 25 first-party PS5 games already in the works, PlayStation fans have a lot to look forward to.
Thankfully, there’s a new PlayStation Experience showcase leaking and its just around the corner:
PlayStation Studios Acquires Housemarque
In a new PlayStation blog post, Hermen Hulst, Head of Worldwide Studios, welcomes Housemarque to the team.
If you’ve ever played Returnal, Super Stardust HD, or Dead Nation, you know what Housemarque is capable of. So, it seems, does PlayStation Studios, who are unwilling to share the developer’s talents any longer.
“Housemarque’s recent release of Returnal proves the studio is one with incredible vision, capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community,” Hulst writes. “This addition enhances the creative force of PlayStation Studios, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Housemarque.”
UPDATE: When attempting to congratulate Housemarque on its new status, PlayStation Japan just leaked a SECOND new studio acquisition!
Ilari Kuittinen, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Housemarque responds that the team is very excited to finally join the PlayStation Studios family. The Housemarque representative also gives us a look into the company’s future plans.
Housemarque’s Next Game Plans
It seems that, with a game like Returnal under its belt, Housemarque is ready to push the boat even further. With the backing of Sony Interactive Entertainment, the developer will continue what it does best and expand its vision.
“This gives our studio a clear future and a stable opportunity to continue delivering on gameplay centric approaches, while still experimenting with new methods of narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this modern artform.”
Going forward, Housemarque assures fans that it will truly grow into its place in the industry. The Finland-based developer will be working on creating more lasting memories and exhilarating titles in the future.
Expanding on its existing development teams is an excellent move by Sony. After all, PlayStation is already outperforming Xbox in a big way this generation – and securing the lead is never a bad idea.
Meanwhile, thousands of additional PS5 consoles are about to drop! And for those who aren’t a next-gen owner yet, here’s where to find all the PS5 restocks coming this week!
