If you’re wondering what classes as ‘Operator Kills’ in Modern Warfare 2, here’s what you need to know.
When it comes to unlocking certain weapons and completing challenges in MW2 or Warzone 2, you’re likely to come across some confusing phrasing.
After all, while the game might confidently tell you that you require X amount of Operator Kills, it neglects to tell you what classes as an Operator in-game.
Thankfully, we’ve got the answer.
What is an Operator Kill in MW2 & Warzone 2?
An ‘Operator Kill’ is a kill on any real player in MW2 Multiplayer, DMZ, or Warzone 2. Enemy Operators are characters that are being controlled by another human being i.e. not an AI opponent, making them more of a challenge to take down.
Here’s a breakdown of what does and does not class as an Operator in-game:
Operators
- MW2 Multiplayer Opponents
- Warzone 2 Enemies (Except AI in Strongholds/Black Sites)
- Real Players in DMZ
Not Operators
- Private Match AI in MW2
- Warzone 2 Stronghold & Black Site AI
- DMZ AI

Best Way to Get Operator Kills in MW2
The best way to farm Operator Kills for a challenge would be to hop into MW2 Multiplayer and enter a fast-paced gamemode, such as the Shipment-only playlist.
Team Deathmatch games are likely your best bet, as they can be over within 5 minutes and lead to a lot of Operator Kill opportunities.
However, be sure to complete the matches right to the end if you need your Operator Kills to count towards challenge progress.
Why Are Operator Kills Not Tracking?
If your Operator Kills aren’t counting toward your challenge, make sure you’re playing your multiplayer or Warzone matches to the end. When a challenge requires you to get 2 Operator Kills in 15 games, you’ll need to complete all 15 games even after taking down the enemy Operators.
If you leave a match early, your challenge progress often won’t track. This has been the case in the last few Call of Duty titles, as Activision wants to ensure its players are in-game for longer.
Right now, MW2 does seem to let you leave a match and your challenge will still track. However, this may soon be fixed in order to prevent players from leaving matchmaking early.
Thankfully, if you’re trying to unlock a gun like the Chimera that requires Operator kills, there might actually be a faster way to unlock the gun in MW2 & Warzone.
