A character’s inclusion into the Super Smash Bros. series is always a massive deal. Every new comer announcement makes mainstream headlines. New comers can be a complete surprise, such as Joker from Persona 5, or an inevitable inclusion, such as The Hero from Dragon Quest. Steve from Minecraft is in the middle of these two reactions. If he was announced for the series, people would be shocked, but at the same time, it would be something people were expecting for a long time coming.
Steve from Minecraft is easily the most deserving character to be a fighter in the video game hall of fame that is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. At 176,000,000, Minecraft stands as the best selling game of all time. There is no one more fitting to be a fighter than the face of the biggest, most sold video game of all time.
People unfamiliar with Minecraft may not understand how good Steve’s move set could actually be. Fan-made move sets have already proven Steve could work very well in a fighting environment. As an example, his B could be his bow, his recovery could be an ender pearl, etc. The question of him working or not as a fighter has already been answered on various occasions. Sakurai has also proved that almost any character can be a fighter with Piranha Plant.
Is Steve’s inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate realistic to expect? As of now, it depends on a number of factors. If there is a Fighter Pass 2, I would come to the conclusion that it is very likely we would see Steve in the game. Microsoft has already shown that they are open to letting their characters into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Banjo Kazooie’s E3 reveal proved that Microsoft is open to allowing their IP into Smash. Banjo Kazooie’s reveal also sealed the deal for Steve’s inclusion in the current Fighter Pass. It is very unlikely that two Microsoft characters would be in the same Fighter Pass. If there is no Fighter Pass two, there may be no chance of him being in the game until the inevitable successor of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which will likely launch on Nintendo’s next-gen console far into the future.
