Prior to the release of Super Smash Bros Ultimate on Nintendo Switch, the absence of the iconic and infamous character Waluigi sparked controversy throughout the entire community. According to Nintendo, Super Smash Bros Ultimate featured everyone. Even to this day that still isn’t strictly speaking the truth. A series of complaints have been made, alongside an ongoing burst of outcry from fans. In addition, a variety of memes were also made to attempt to promote the importance of this issue. Following the launch of the game, Nintendo has finally commented on Waluigi’s absence in Super Smash Bros’ latest instalment. Whilst it doesn’t give any indication on whether the character will eventually make an appearance or not, it does, however, confirm they are very much aware of the problem.
Nintendo Acknowledge Waluigi’s Absence in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
In a recent interview with Okay Cool, Nintendo of Canada’s Andrew Collins made it very clear they were aware of the character’s non-existence. He mentioned:
“When you have something that goes viral like that it’s brilliant… And let’s face it, it’s funny. I’ve seen some of the photos. I’ve seen some of the artwork that people have created, and it’s fantastic to see their passion.”
Interestingly, Collins doesn’t seem to think of Waluigi’s absence as much of an issue. It seems as if Nintendo didn’t include the much loved character to create discussion and controversy, and they certainly haven’t failed with that. As mentioned above, the amount of memes posted regarding this is staggering. The problem began to circulate in the Nintendo community, since then it has advanced into a highly discussed topic in general. It appears Nintendo has benefited from everything, the controversy has most likely developed even more interest into the latest edition of the Super Smash Bros series.
Whilst there is no indication on whether the character will arrive as post-launch content, we cannot get our hopes up. However, it’s certainly better than Nintendo just dismissing it.
What do you think? Would you like to see Waluigi make an appearance in Super Smash Bros Ultimate for Nintendo Switch, or would you prefer for the memes and controversy to continue?
