The president of Nintendo has stated that the company's next console is officially in development.
The Switch has been so popular, that few would expect a new console from Nintendo any time soon.
The likes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have made the console a surefire success. It's one of Nintendo's most popular consoles ever, and for good reason.
The JoyCon was a revelation for controllers (despite some shifty JoyCon drift lawsuits), and the handheld/ home console concept has changed gaming invariably.
Plus, now there are rumors of a Switch Pro on the horizon. The Switch Pro's official name has been leaked, and it's thought that Breath of the Wild 2 will be its launch title.
But, only four years after the console's release, we've had word that a new console is already in development.
Nintendo's Next Console Is In Development
He explained that Nintendo's separate teams for hardware and software are "communicating closely", and are working in the same building. They're figuring out what the next era of video games could look like for Nintendo. Plus, not to mention what's coming in the future.
Furukawa also speaks on how long these processes often take. "In order to create a single piece of hardware, we have to do a lot of preparation several years in advance, so we are working without stopping.
"In the end, the deciding factor in whether or not to commercialize a product is whether it can create a new experience."
Now that the Switch is roughly halfway through its predicted lifestyle, this makes sense. And we don't know about you, but it doesn't feel like we've had the Switch for as long as that.
Whatever it is that Nintendo is cooking up, we expect it to be exciting. It's hard to imagine they'll return to the strict model of making handheld and home consoles separately after the advent of the Switch. But Nintendo is unpredictable after all, so we'll have to wait and see.
If we're lucky, Nintendo will be revolutionizing the gaming industry once again in as little as a few years.
There's still plenty to be excited about regarding the Switch, though. The recent Nintendo Direct revealed a huge plethora of new upcoming games.
Not only that, but there's more Legend of Zelda HD remakes to come to the console too.
