Nintendo President Warns of Impending Switch Shortage in 2022

It seems that supply issues are finally hitting Nintendo, with an impending Switch shortage arriving in 2022.

Over the last year, global supply shortages have been making life hard for gamers looking to get their hands on a PS5 or Xbox Series X. And with the launch of the Nintendo Switch OLED in October 2021, even Nintendo fans have been struggling to find their new console.

The ongoing supply issues are brought on by the global lack of semiconductor chips, used in all manner of electronics. And although Nintendo hasn’t been suffering as much as Sony or Microsoft, it appears that its stock is finally running low.

In a new statement by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, the company head reveals that Switch production may stagnate in early 2022.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the chip shortage affecting Nintendo Switch production. But it’s concerning to see that the issues will continue into 2022.

Nintendo Switch OLED Shortage Coming in Early 2022

It seems that it’s about to get harder to find a Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED console in early 2022.

As we head into the new year, it appears that Nintendo Switch units are having trouble meeting demand. For months, Nintendo’s handheld/console hybrid has been the top-selling gaming device.

However, it seems that Nintendo is having issues creating enough units to meet demand already. In November, Nintendo reduced its predicted sales for the fiscal year ending in March 2022 from 25.5 million to 24 million units.

Now, a statement from Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa reveals that a shortage of Switch units could be on the way.

President Furukawa states that he isn’t certain the company will be able to supply enough consoles following Black Friday. What’s more, depending on demand, the company might not be able to make as many units as it’d like.

Thankfully, you can still easily buy a Nintendo Switch OLED in-store at these retailers. But this might not be the case for long.

Then again, Furukawa is simply warning us of the possibility of a shortage, rather than a certainty. After all, the Nintendo President warned fans about a Switch shortage in 2021 too, despite the console’s abundance over the last year.
