Sledgehammer Games has listened to fans and significantly improved the ADS idle sway for mouse and keyboard users in MW3 Season 2!
Since Modern Warfare 3’s launch, players have complained about the game’s issues with aiming accuracy, particularly for mouse and keyboard users. By far its biggest issue was the aggressive implementation of ADS aim idle sway.
Thankfully, Sledgehammer Games has improved MW3’s aim precision and accuracy for mouse keyboard users by significantly nerfing ADS idle sway. Rejoice!
Season 2 Patch Fixes ADS Aim Idle Sway
In Season 2’s first major patch, Sledgehammer Games has significantly improved aiming accuracy and precision across the board for MW3.
As stated on the SHG Twitter/X page, the dev team has implemented “substantial changes to ADS idle sway and other weapon attributes” in MW3 and Warzone:
In addition to aim idle sway, MW3’s aggressive hipfire sway also received a much-needed nerf in the Season 2 patch. You can see the effects of these improvements in the embedded video above.
It has significantly reduced both ADS idle sway and hipfire crosshair sway in MW3 and Warzone.
Here’s what Sledgehammer Games said about the ADS idle sway improvements in the official patch notes:
- ADS idle sway now initiates shortly after aiming down sight, rather than immediately, introducing a delay to the sway curve that is generally 5ms long but varies by weapon.
- After the initial delay, ADS idle sway now gradually increases over a 3s period before reaching peak speed, rather than beginning at full speed upon aiming down sights.
- ADS idle sway now consistently begins from the position of the player’s hipfire crosshair, rather than along the sway curve.
These changes are meant to ensure that players with “fast reflexes and precise aim” aren’t at a disadvantage when they aim down sights.
It’s important to note that Sniper Rifles were not affected by these changes, most likely to maintain balance.
Similarly, hipfire sway received an update as a way to “reward skillful aim”:
- Hipfire crosshair will no longer sway from the center of the screen while the player moves or rotates the camera.
- Weapon bullet trajectory is now truly aligned with the hipfire crosshair, and thus, the center of the player’s screen.

What is ADS Idle Sway?
ADS idle sway is when your aiming reticule moves to a random location away from your original target when you aim down sights in MW3. The reticule will also move randomly off-center while ADS and strafing.
ADS idle sway should, in theory, discourage players from aiming down sights for too long. However, the feature was previously far too prominent, causing what many to be an unnecessary and egregious form of visual recoil.
These much-hated features made it so player’s aim accuracy was determined more by RNG than skill and was a particular point of frustration for mouse and keyboard users. It has been apparent in the Call of Duty series ever since the Modern Warfare 2019 reboot.
Previously, these negative aiming effects were worst felt by mouse and keyboard users. The aggressive aim assist on controller did a lot to negate the effects of ADS idle sway for console players.
This was the main reason why we chose controller over mouse and keyboard as the better control option for MW3.
Thankfully Sledgehammer Games has significantly nerfed both ADS idle sway and horizontal sway in MW3 and Warzone as a way to significantly improve the aiming experience in the game!
Here’s hoping SHG continues to listen to fans and improve the game based on player feedback going forward.
