Players have discovered a nod to the finale of the original MW2 2009 campaign, with a new Easter egg hiding on the MW3 Rust map!
The Call of Duty community will never forget the magic that was the original Modern Warfare series, even now that we’ve re-lived all three games in the rebooted universe.
MW3 2023 is a total love letter to the original Modern Warfare 2, which was released all the way back in 2009. And alongside bringing back all the OG maps, it seems that Sledgehammer Games couldn’t resist slipping in a reference to the final moments of the MW2 campaign.
Don’t Miss This General Shepherd Easter Egg on Rust
Head into Rust on MW3 and you’ll be able to find a very strange skull with a knife sticking out of its left eye socket.
The skull is located on the east side of the map, near a white wire coil on the ground. You can see its exact location in the image below:
Although the skull is easy to miss, blending into the sand and not drawing attention to itself, it’s more than just an interesting piece of decor.
In fact, this is clearly an Easter egg referencing the final mission of MW2 2009.
Spoiler warning for the original Modern Warfare 2, a 14-year-old game.
In ‘Endgame,’ the finale of the the MW2 campaign, Soap MacTavish and Captain Price chase after General Shepherd in order to get their revenge. Upon encountering an injured Shepherd, Soap goes in for the kill, only to get stabbed in the chest himself.
As Price and Shepherd go head to head, the General gets the better of the Task Force 141 leader.
As Shepherd begins to beat the Captain repeatedly in the face, Soap pulls the knife from his own chest and throws the blade directly into the MW2 antagonist’s left eye.
It’s one of the most iconic moments in Call of Duty history, and one that clearly deserves commemoration all this time later.
And since the final moments of the campaign take place on the Rust map in Afghanistan, it makes sense that this is where the Easter egg is hiding!
