MW2 Face Off Mode: Release Date & Explanation

As chaotic as you remember it - Face Off is making a triumphant return!

A classic Call of Duty mode that recently returned in Modern Warfare 2019 and Cold War, Face Off is back once again in MW2.

The mode first appeared in Modern Warfare 3, where it became a popular small team experience. Now, fans are glad to see Face Off returning – even if its release date is a little further out than we’d like it to be.

What Is Face Off Mode in MW2?

Face Off is a Call of Duty game mode which pits players against one another in fierce 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 match-ups across a variety of modes.

The mode is mostly played on smaller maps, leading to a fast-paced and intense experience. On these maps, Face Off players can experience Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed, or Domination games.

There are also usually no killstreaks or scorestreaks to worry about, making Face Off all about which team is better at gunplay.

When Face Off returned in Black Ops Cold War, it offered players a chance to fight it out in 6v6 chaotic games on the smaller Gunfight maps. However, Modern Warfare 2019 only featured the 3v3 variant.

Right now, Activision has not revealed exactly how Face Off will appear in MW2, but fans of the mode can expect a return to close-quarters action.

It is similar to COD 4’s Cage Match mode or Modern Warfare 2019’s Gunfight. Interestingly, Gunfight is also returning in MW2 Season 3, making Face Off a slightly different way to play.

However, unlike Gunfight, Face Off has respawns turned on meaning players can respawn as many times as they need during the game.

Previously, the Face Off mode has appeared in MW3, Modern Warfare 2019, and Black Ops Cold War.

Face Off Release Date in MW2

Face Off mode will release in MW2 Season 3 Reloaded, though not necessarily on the update’s release date.

Currently, Season 3 Reloaded is expected to release around May 10, 2023, but no date has been officially revealed for the upcoming patch.

According to Activision, Face Off will drop ‘sometime during the mid-season update’. It could, therefore, arrive closer to the launch of Season 4, if Infinity Ward fails to get the mode ready in time.

Thankfully, there’s another fan-favorite COD game mode returning much sooner than Face Off to keep players busy.
