Fans believe that Cold War could be on the way out after Modern Warfare proves more popular on Twitch.
When it comes to video games, those that perform well in the streaming market are often the ones that see the most success. Just look at this popular 2020 title that took off just because of Twitch streams alone.
In the case of Call of Duty, newer is often seen as being better. Every year a new COD title comes out to replace its predecessor in a decision that doesn't always make everyone happy.
Right now, fans are still arguing that Black Ops Cold War is a downgrade from Modern Warfare, both graphically, and gameplay-wise. After Cold War inclusion was forced into Modern Warfare's menus too, the game became something of a living advertisement.
And the final nail in the coffin was Activision refusing to release Modern Warfare Season 7 content. Even to this day, we have to rely on leaks to tell us when Soap is becoming a Warzone Operator.
Modern Warfare More Active Than Cold War on Twitch
But despite everything, it appears that Modern Warfare is more popular than its follow-up Black Ops Cold War when it comes to Twitch.
For whatever reason, there are more users streaming Infinity Ward's Call of Duty while interest is waning for Cold War.
At the time of this article's writing, there are only 4900 viewers on Black Ops Cold War streams, while Modern Warfare has around 8400. While these numbers are sure to change constantly, it's very telling to have Modern Warfare able to eclipse its predecessor in this way.
According to TwitchTracker, Modern Warfare is also the 19th biggest game on Twitch - with 4,700 live channels broadcasting right now. On the other hand, Cold War has only 827 streamers active, and its average viewers in the last week are also significantly lower.
It certainly shows just how popular the older title still is. But that's no surprise, given that the Modern Warfare active player base is still massive. However, it's also worth noting that some streamers are mislabelling their Warzone streams as Modern Warfare too.
Of course, Black Ops is in a dry spell as we wait for next week's Cold War Season 2 Reloaded. We're sure interest in the Treyarch title will rise again with the next major update.
This is particularly true seeing as there's a new night-time Outbreak map coming in Cold War Season 2 Reloaded. But who knows how long this will be enough to hold player interest.
Perhaps the problem is more serious than just a lack of new content, however. After all, players are calling Warzone unplayable in Season 2 and that game has more interest than both games combined.
Now we're getting new details about the 'alternate reality' Call of Duty 2021 game leaking online. It makes us wonder how the new title will be competing with these games in the future.
Until the release of Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Remastered later this year, Infinity Ward fans will likely stick with their favorite game.
