Modern Warfare 2 (2022), the latest release for the Call of Duty franchise, has become the biggest in its history on PlayStation and Steam at launch.
The Call of Duty series has long been one of the biggest gaming IPs, consistently selling well yearly. Things looked promising when the MW2 Beta was the biggest beta in franchise history, but the launch has brought better numbers for Activision Blizzard.
MW2 2022 Makes COD History as Biggest Game on Steam & PlayStation
MW2 saw over 260,000 peak players on Steam over the launch weekend, boosting it to the top games on the platform.
Modern Warfare 2 is the first time a game in the series has been released on Steam in five years. The last game to come to Valve’s storefront was Call of Duty WWII, back in 2017.

However, Steam wasn’t the only place where MW2 has been hugely successful. The official PlayStation Twitter account shared a tweet, congratulating Activision on Modern Warfare 2 being the biggest Call of Duty launch on the PlayStation Store.
While PlayStation didn’t offer exact figures for the launch weekend, they did confirm the record included pre-orders and day-one sales.
What Is the Current Steam Peak Players for Modern Warfare 2?
The current peak for players on Modern Warfare 2 (2022) on Steam is 262,875. This was on October 30, 2022.
As for the second-highest peak, MW2 also saw 237,834 players on the day of launch, October 28. In fact, this peak was only seen one hour after the game launched.

It’s worth noting that Black Ops 4, Modern Warfare (2019), Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, and Warzone were all exclusive to Battlenet. This means that they weren’t available on Steam.
Additionally, Modern Warfare Remastered was also released as part of special editions for Infinite Warfare first, before releasing standalone in mid-2017.
