Modern Warfare 2 will have a brand new Gunsmith system where players can customize their weapons. The revamped system will include some exciting features, including a Firing Range.
One of the most important aspects of any Call of Duty game is the Gunsmith and weapon customization. Having a great team will surely help, but having the right weapon build can mean all the difference on the battlefield.
Here’s everything you need to know about Modern Warfare 2’s Gunsmith 2.0 to build your best weapon.
How Does Gunsmith 2.0 in Modern Warfare 2 Work?
The Gunsmith in Modern Warfare 2 will allow you to interchange attachments and create a weapon build that suits your play style and help you thrive in multiplayer.
All Possible Weapon Attachments Slots
You’ll be able to change the following attachment slots:
- Muzzle
- Barrel
- Laser
- Optic
- Stock
- Underbarrel
- Ammunition
- Magazine
- Rear Grip
- Receiver
Most of these are familiar, but the one that stands out in MW2 is the Receiver. This attachment slot is part of the new Weapon Platforms mechanic, which will completely change the way progression works for your weapons.

What Is a Weapon Platform in MW2
Weapon Platforms are a new mechanic in MW2 Gunsmith that allows weapon role swapping within the same weapon manufacturer by using Receiver attachments.
Here is how they work:
- As you level up you will unlock different Weapons Platforms.
- The first time you unlock a Weapons Platform, you will obtain a Receiver as an attachment.
- This Receiver attachment determines the weapons primary role and its play style. It’s basically the weapon’s base.
- To access additional weapons in that Weapons Platform, you’ll need to level up a weapon in that family and unlock additional Receiver attachments.
- The Weapons Platform would be considered a Gun Tree while each Receiver attachment is a different branch.
- As you level up weapons from that Weapons Platform, you will unlock different branches to use.
- Weapon Platforms aren’t bound by classes and can contain any combination of weapons. This includes Submachine Guns, Battle Rifles, Light Machine Guns, Automatic Rifles, and more.
- There are still Weapons Platforms contain a single weapon, including:
- RPG-7
- Lockwood Mk2 “cowboy rifle”
For example, the M4 is the first Weapon Platform you will unlock from the manufacturer Tempus Armaments. You’ll be able to change the M4 Receiver attachment and alter it into the following weapons as you rank up the M4:
- FTAC Recon
- 556 Icarus
- M16
- FSS Hurricane
If you can’t wait to see every Receiver, then check out our MW2 Countdown to know exactly when it releases.

Weapon Platforms & Progression
Progression is bound to the Weapon Platforms. This new progression system means that in MW2, attachments unlock for multiple weapons within a Weapon Platform at once.
This is something that is new to Modern Warfare 2 and will help players spend less time grinding different weapons.
How Does Weapon Progression Work
Progression allows leveling up different Weapon Platforms to unlock two types of attachments:
- Weapon Platform Attachments:
- These are attachments that you’ll only be able to use within the same Weapon Platform family once unlocked in the Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith:
- Receivers
- Barrels
- Stocks
- Rear Grips
- Magazines
- These are attachments that you’ll only be able to use within the same Weapon Platform family once unlocked in the Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith:
- Universal Attachments:
- These are attachments that players can use across all Weapon Platforms.
- Optics
- Ammunition
- Underbarrels
- Foregrips
- Muzzles
- These are attachments that players can use across all Weapon Platforms.
When you unlock a Universal Attachment, you will be able to use across the entire Gunsmith. This means that any weapon that can equip it, will have it unlocked.
If you unlock a Weapon Platform Attachment, you can use it with any weapon within the same Weapon Platform.
You can try out the new Gunsmith 2.0 functions if you get access to this weekend’s Modern Warfare 2 Open Beta.
Access Firing Range Directly from Gunsmith
Once you’ve sorted your weapon, you’ll be able to enter the Firing Range directly from the Gunsmith in Modern Warfare 2.
This means that you will not need to sacrifice your K/D to test out how well a weapon performs for you.
