Marvel’s Avengers and Nintendo Switch Dominated Sales in September

The Crystal Dynamics title became the second-best debut of a superhero game, while the Nintendo console remains at the top.

The franchise's weight played in favor of Marvel's Avengers, as the controversy and doubts surrounding its launch didn't prevent it from getting success.

Mat Piscatella, NPD Group's analyst, presented the list with September's best-selling games in the United States. The first place went to the title developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix.

Despite the uncertainty about its future, the companies knew how to take advantage of the franchise's strength to occupy the top spot.

The ten best-selling games of September 2020

  1. Marvel's Avengers
  2. Super Mario 3D All-Stars
  3. Madden NFL 21
  4. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2
  5. NBA 2K21
  6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  7. Crusader Kings III
  8. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  9. Star Wars: Squadrons
  10. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe

According to the report, Marvel's Avengers' sales had such good results that it's already the second-best debut of a superhero game in the US. It's only below Marvel's Spider-Man.

On the other side, second place went to the controversial Super Mario 3D All-Stars; a compilation for the Nintendo Switch on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.

Another of last month's standout titles was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2; a remaster of the original 1999 and 2000 games, which came in fourth.

Nintendo Switch breaks Xbox 360 record in the United States.

After the Wii U misstep, Nintendo got back on track with Nintendo Switch, as it has been a hit in major markets since its launch.

Piscatella himself pointed out the console is selling at levels never seen in the country.

Besides, this time Nintendo's success has something different, as the console completed 22 months in the first place of sales in the US.

With this, the Nintendo Switch broke the record Xbox 360 had set from August 2011 to April 2013, with 21 months at the top.

And so, Nintendo closes another year of success, with their biggest test around the corner with the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

However, the forecasts remain in favor of the Nintendo console at least for 2020, as it's expected to outsell the next-gen systems.
