Is Atreus Playable in God of War Ragnarok?

Kratos may be the iconic lead of the God of War series, but is his son Atreus playable in Ragnarok?

The God of War series has always put the spotlight on Kratos, the titular main character, but his son was also a protagonist in the 2018 game.

A few years have passed since the duo set off the events to start Ragnarok, meaning Atreus has become more proficient in his abilities. But can you test out his newfound moves?

There will be some minor God of War Ragnarok spoilers in this article, so turn back if you don't want the experience to be ruined.

Can You Play as Atreus in God of War Ragnarok?

Yes, you can play as Atreus in God of War Ragnarok. However, these are only in select missions and you cannot switch between Kratos and Atreus whenever you feel like it.

The first mission where you play as Atreus is in the main story chapter, Old Friends.

Atreus has his own set of skills, which work when he’s playable as well as when he is a companion. Therefore, it might be worth unlocking some of Atreus’ early skills before you play his missions.

Unlike his father, Atreus uses a bow and arrow to fight enemies. He can still fight up close by swinging his bow, but you’re better playing him a fair distance away from monsters.

He also can’t pull off the feats of strength Kratos can, meaning some obstacles will block your way.

In replacement of Kratos’ Rage meter, Atreus can become a fierce Wolf when activated by pressing L3 and R3 at the same time. However, this doesn’t happen until the second time he is playable.

Since you’ll mainly be playing as Kratos, it may be worth finding Frozen Flames to upgrade his Leviathan Axe.

For those wanting to beat the main story before getting the ending spoiled, here’s how long it takes to beat Ragnarok.
