If you’ve just started playing Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer, the option to choose Custom Loadouts is most likely locked for you.
That’s because you need to reach a certain level before you can bring your own weapon Loadouts to battle.
How to Unlock Custom Loadouts in MW2
To unlock Custom Loadouts in Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer, you will need to reach Level 4. The easiest way to reach this level is by playing a few multiplayer matches or completing some of the daily challenges.

If you don’t want to play competitive until you get Custom Loadouts, then you can try one or two Spec Ops missions and complete daily challenges there. Cross-progression between Multiplayer and Spec Ops allows you to level up while playing either mode.
Fortunately, we have a guide on the fastest ways to level up in Modern Warfare 2, so you can choose whatever way works best for you.

What Default Classes Are Available?
- Assault – Rusher
- Phantom – Rusher
- Hunter – Stalker
- Deadeye – Stalker
- Tank – Sentinel

Rusher default classes are made for players who enjoy “running and gunning” with a more aggressive playstyle. Stalkers are players who prefer to follow enemy movements and play objectives instead of getting high kills.
Finally, Sentinels are set to protect themselves from death. They’re typically what people call “campers”, as they prefer to wait out enemies instead of rushing into firefights.
How to Create Custom Loadouts in MW2
Once you’ve reached level 4 in Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer, you will be able to create custom classes. Here’s how to do it:
- Go to the Weapons tab at the top of the screen
- Press R1 or RB on PlayStation or Xbox. Click on the tab on PC
- Select the Multiplayer Loadout option
- Select an existing loadout or press the ‘+’ on the left-hand side
- Choose whichever primary and secondary guns you want, as well as your other equipment
Unfortunately, you’ll need to level up a bunch of different guns to unlock all weapons in the game. But there are some guns you can equip sooner if you have blueprints.
How to Equip Blueprints in Modern Warfare 2
You can equip blueprints by finding a gun with translucent orange squares behind it and selecting the Armory option. You can only use your blueprints once you have reached level 4 and unlocked Custom Loadouts.

The Armory option will only appear on guns that you own a blueprint of. Other weapons will simply appear as Equip or Locked.
Those who pre-ordered the game on PlayStation will have access to a PlayStation Exclusive blueprint in MW2.
