Looking to unlock all the attachments for that perfect loadout in MW2? Here’s everything you need to know:
If you’re confused about the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith, you’re not alone. After all, Infinity Ward is making some major changes to the Modern Warfare & Warzone formula.
No longer will you be able to grind a single gun to unlock all of its attachments. But, handily, unlocking some attachments will make them available on other weapons in the gun’s ‘family’.
It’s a strange new system and if you’re just looking to unlock that red dot sight, it can be a bit confusing. Here’s what you need to know, as you discover the best guns and loadouts in Modern Warfare 2.
How to Unlock Attachments in Modern Warfare 2
To unlock attachments in Modern Warfare 2, players need to level up their chosen gun by getting kills and completing matches in online multiplayer or Warzone 2.
Doing this will unlock more of the attachments in the gun’s progression line.
You can check a gun’s progression line by going to customize your loadout, selecting a gun, and moving from ‘Build Weapon’ to ‘Progression’ using R1/RB or with your mouse.
However, simply unlocking all the attachments in a single weapon’s progression line isn’t enough. You’ll need to dive deeper into the weapon family and grind out some other guns in order to fully kit out your initial pick.

Let’s take a closer look at how this works, by unlocking the red dot sight in MW2.
The following is an example for the entire Tempus Armament weapon family, including the M4, FSS Hurricane, and FTAC Recon:
MW2: How to Unlock the Red Dot Sight for M4
- First, you need to level up the M4 until it reaches Level 13 to unlock the FTAC Recon, a Battle Rifle.
- Then, grind that FTAC Recon until it hits Level 16 to unlock the FSS Hurricane SMG.
- Finally, get the Hurricane to Level 3 to unlock the Cronen Mini Red Dot.
- Thanks to MW2’s Receiver system, you can equip that optic on any gun in the family, including the Hurricane, FTAC Recon, and even the M4!
And after making progress with 3 separate weapons, you now have the red dot sight for all Tempus Armament guns.
Of course, you’ll need to unlock it for all other weapon families separately, so bear that in mind!
