One of the biggest challenges that players will face in The Legend of Zelda: TOTK is adapting to survive the cold weather in Hyrule.
Without the proper equipment, some areas are too cold for Link to explore, leading to him slowly losing his health. This could prove troublesome when players are trying to finish a mission or find a shrine.
Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to survive the cold in Tears of the Kingdom. Here are some tips on how to stay warm in the snowy terrains of Hyrule in TOTK.
How to Survive Cold in Tears of the Kingdom
Players can survive the cold in TOTK by cooking recipes that raise cold resistance or wearing cold-resistant armor.
There are various cold-resistant armors, but one of the earliest ones players can obtain is the Archaic Warm Greaves while in the starting area, Great Sky Island.
Once you obtain this armor piece, you’ll have a permanent 1 Cold Resistance boost for Link. This means you can survive longer in cold areas like the Herba Mountains and Gerudio Desert at night.
Best Way to Get Cold Resistance in TOTK
The best way to obtain Cold Resistance in TOTK is by purchasing the Snowquill Armor Set at Brazen Beak in Rito Village. Players will need 2,150 Rupees to purchase all three pieces of the set.
With its base stats, this armor set gives players 9 Defense and 3 Cold Resistance. Players can find Rito Village just past the Tabantha Great Bridge, north of Tabantha Frontier.

Once there, make your way to Brazen Beak, and you’ll see the Snowquill Headdress, Snowquill Trousers, and Snowquill Tunic on stands ready for purchase.
Armor | Price | Base Defense Stat |
---|---|---|
Snowquill Headdress | 650 Rupees | 3 |
Snowquill Trousers | 1000 Rupees | 3 |
Snowquill Tunic | 500 Rupees | 3 |
This armor set is enough to handle the harsh cold you’ll face as you adventure through the snowy regions, but if you need more, you can always cook up a quick recipe.
How to Increase Cold Resistance Quickly
The fastest way to increase your Cold Resistance in a pinch is to cook up 5 Spicy Peppers using the Portable Pot Zonai Device, campfires found throughout the world, or a Cooking Pot found in towns.
This allows you to have a consumable with you on the field to use if you suddenly encounter cold temperatures quickly.

There are even more advanced recipes with boosted recipes for cold resistance, including:
Recipe | Ingredients | Effect |
---|---|---|
Spicy Sauteed Peppers | Spicy Pepper x5 | • 5 Hearts • 12 minutes and 30 seconds of Cold Resistance |

This will create the Sauteed Peppers recipe that will increase your Cold Resistance for a total of 10 minutes.
