It’s time to reclaim your legendary weapon – here’s how to get the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: TOTK!
At the beginning of Tears of the Kingdom, Link loses the Master Sword in the battle against a newly-revived Ganondorf. Without the sword of legends, our hero gets a major nerf – and even more confusingly the hilt soon disappears too!
Thankfully, there’s a way to get the Master Sword back. And while it can be done early in the game, you’ll find it easier to tackle this after you’ve completed all 4 Temples in TOTK.

How to Get the Master Sword in TOTK
To get the Master Sword in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, players need to first have increased their stamina by an additional ring.
They then need to find the Light Dragon which is flying around Hyrule and find a way to land on its head where the sword is waiting.
There are 2 ways to make this easier:
Method 1 – Finding the Dragon’s Tears
First, if you’re wondering exactly how the Master Sword came to be buried in the head of the Light Dragon, make sure you find all the Dragon’s Tears locations in Zelda: TOTK!

Not only will the story will be revealed with each one you find, but the Light Dragon will appear above you at a lower altitude than usual once you find the final tear.
After that, you can launch yourself straight to the Light Dragon via a Skyview Tower if you have the Stamina to manage it. But there’s a way to more easily get to your goal.
Method 2 – Saving the Great Deku Tree
By entering Korok Forest and saving the Great Deku Tree from Gloom, you’ll get the Master Sword’s position marked on your map.
The Great Deku Tree will note that the sword is moving, as it is currently in the head of the Light Dragon.

What’s more, the Light Dragon will begin flying even lower, allowing you to reach it with only your glider!
Of course, it’s always possible that resourceful players will put together flying machines to reach the Light Dragon earlier, but the beast is often soaring too high in the clouds prior to rescuing the Deku Tree.
Pull the Master Sword from the Light Dragon’s Head
Land on the Dragon which is now marked on your map and make your way to its head. There, you’ll find the Master Sword.

When you try and take it, you’ll need to hold the A button for a long time, while Link’s stamina drains. If you have less than 2 stamina circles, you’ll be unable to pull it free.
Don’t forget that you can respec some Heart Containers into Stamina Vessels, if you choose!
However, if you have obtained a second stamina ring in addition to your initial ring, Link will have the strength to hold on and pull the Master Sword free.

Can the Master Sword Break in Zelda: TOTK?
No, the Master Sword will never break in Zelda: TOTK! However, the weapon will run out of energy after dealing a certain amount of damage.
At that point the sword will disappear for a while to recharge. Never fear though, as you’ll be notified after around 10 minutes that the Master Sword is ready to use again and it’ll appear back in your list of weapons.
What’s more, you can use Fuse to attach items to the Master Sword, powering it up without worrying about wasting your weapon.

Although the attached item will break after a while, the Master Sword will be yours forever.
How Powerful is the Master Sword in TOTK?
Although no damage values appear in Tears of the Kingdom, the Master Sword seems to do 30 damage per hit. This is the same damage as the sword did in Breath of the Wild, which is no surprise.
However, when fighting against Gloom-infused enemies, the Master Sword appears to power up, glowing slightly. And yes, this includes the final boss of the game!

When it glows, the weapon appears to deal bonus damage, although we can’t tell how much exactly.
The Master Sword also has a bonus ability that’s exclusive to the legendary weapon. When at full health, Link can hold R and release to throw a beam of light forward.
This blast does more damage based on the number of hearts Link currently has.
