How To Enable 120FPS on PS5 & Turn On 120Hz Settings

This helpful guide will let you get the highest PS5 frame rates on 120Hz monitors.

While 4k might get all the headlines, having a high frame rate can be even better. There’s a huge difference between playing games in 60fps and 120fps.

Games will look smoother, but also feel more responsive. This is integral to give you a competitive advantage in online multiplayer games.

Therefore, you’ll want to make sure 120fps is enabled if your TV or monitor supports it. Luckily, the first major PS5 system update added 120Hz support for more monitors.

How To Enable 120FPS on PS5

There are a few simple steps to enabling 120fps on your PS5:

  • Firstly, you’ll want to check that your monitor or TV is 120Hz and supports 120fps. There are loads of new HDMI 2.1 monitors coming soon that support 120fps in 4k too, if you’re interested.
  • Next, go to the PS5 settings, found in the top right corner.
  • From there, select ‘Screen’, then ‘Video’, and select ‘Video Output’.
  • At the bottom of the list, you will see the option ‘Enable 120Hz Output’. Make sure this is enabled.

This will make sure your PS5 is running in 120fps if you have a 120Hz monitor or TV. However, some games will also require you to change the in-game settings to get 120fps.

Performance Mode on PS5 Games

To get the 120FPS on some PS5 games you will also have to go into the video setting on the in-game settings menu.

For instance, in Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War or Spider-Man: Miles Morales, you will have to turn on a setting called ‘Performance Mode’. This will ensure you are playing at the highest frame rate possible, but you won’t have all of the fancy ray-tracing effects.

Once you’ve done this, you can be sure all of your games are in 120fps. Hopefully the rumored upcoming new Uncharted game and Last of Us remake will run on such a high frame rate!
