A Hogwarts Legacy player has discovered that opening a chest with full gear slots will lock that chest loot to the current level of your items.
This means that if you return to that chest in the future with higher-level gear, you’ll still receive loot equal to the level you first opened the chest at.
The Reddit thread itself provided some useful ways to prevent this from happening. These include:
- Selling any unused items at Hogsmeade when you are in the area.
- If you have an item that is pretty low compared to your other gear, head to Gladrags Wizardwear to purchase an item with a higher level.
- Wear the best gear in your inventory before you open a chest. This allows the chest RNG to provide something slightly better than the items you are wearing.
- Complete the Merlin Trials sidequest to increase your inventory size.
Use these tips to help you keep your inventory low to maximize your potential loot rolls from chests.

One of the most important aspects of Hogwarts Legacy is your gear and loot. As you explore Hogwarts, you’ll find different chests with different gear. Each chest you open will give you an item that’ll improve your stats based on what you currently have equipped.
But if you open a chest while your inventory is full, then you’ll need to either:
- Head to Hogsmeade and sell your current gear until your slots are empty, and grab the new gear.
- Return later but risk obtaining gear that is way under your level.
This does not include any in-game cosmetics you may have received as rewards from connecting your WB Games account to Twitch.
Those rewards are purely cosmetic and need to be equipped by altering the appearance of currently equipped items.
How to Check Gear Slots Inventory Hogwarts Legacy
To quickly check how full your gear slots are in Hogwarts Legacy, follow these steps:
- Open your Field Guide.
- Head to the “Gear” tab.
- Choose any of the gear you have equipped.
- This will bring up any gear you can replace it with, but it will also show how full your inventory is on the top right of your gear.
- When starting Hogwarts Legacy, your inventory will have 20 gear slots. All slots are shared by the different types of gear.
