After a long decade-long wait for a new Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar finally revealed the trailer for GTA 6 – but which platforms will it launch on?

Despite a 2025 release window, Rockstar has already announced which platforms GTA 6 will be coming to when it launches.

What Platforms Will GTA 6 Launch On?

According to an official press release from Rockstar, GTA 6 will come to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S when it launches in 2025.

Rockstar Games®, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PlayStation® 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S games and entertainment systems in 2025.

There was no mention of PC or any other platform during the press release. Therefore it’s safe to assume that GTA 6 will exclusively release for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, initially.

Is It Coming to PC?

Based on Rockstar’s previous games, it is very likely that GTA 6 will release on PC eventually.

All previous Grand Theft Auto games have released on PC sooner or later. There’s no reason to believe this won’t happen for GTA 6.

When looking at two of the more recent Rockstar hits, we can get a sense of when GTA 6 may be coming to PC.

For GTA V, the game originally released on PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17, 2013. It later received a PC port one year and seven months later on April 14, 2015.

The more recent Red Dead Redemption 2 had a slightly shorter launch window for its PC release. It originally launched on PS4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018. It came out on PC one year and one month later on November 5, 2019.

Therefore, it’s likely we’ll see a PC release of GTA 6 a year or so after it launches for consoles. This would probably be sometime in 2026.

Will it Come to PS4 & Xbox One?

No, it is doubtful that GTA 6 will ever release on PS4 and Xbox One. This is most likely because of their outdated hardware.

It was a similar story for GTA V when it released in 2013. Back then, it only launched on the latest consoles of the time, the PS3 and Xbox 360. It completely skipped the previous generation due to hardware constraints.

This is supported by Rockstar’s very own Sam Houser in the recent press release:

“Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences”

Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar

As Houser mentioned, Rockstar aims to “push the limits” in GTA 6. It suggests that last-gen hardware isn’t up to snuff for the latest Grand Theft Auto adventure.

Will it Come to Nintendo Switch?

No, GTA 6 will almost certainly not come to the Nintendo Switch. This is most likely because of the console’s outdated hardware.

Historically, the Grand Theft Auto series has steered clear of Nintendo platforms. Presumably, this was due to the hardware limitations of Nintendo consoles compared to the competition, in addition to Nintendo’s more family-friendly nature.

However, more Rockstar games have appeared on Nintendo platforms in recent years. In 2021 the remastered Definitive Edition of the GTA Trilogy launched simultaneously on the Nintendo Switch as on other platforms. More recently, the first Red Dead Redemption released on Switch back in August 2023.

This gives some hope to Grand Theft Auto fans hoping to see GTA 6 on a Nintendo system… just don’t expect it on the Switch. Similar to the PS4 and Xbox One, the Switch’s hardware presumably couldn’t handle it.

If it ever releases on a Nintendo platform, expect GTA 6 to come to their next-generation hardware, which is the yet-to-be-announced Nintendo Switch successor.

Will It Come to Next-Gen Consoles?

Based on Rockstar’s track record, yes, it is likely that GTA 6 will release a next-gen version for next-gen consoles.

When looking at GTA V’s extremely successful decade-long run, much of it is due to its next-gen upgrades and rereleases. GTA 6 will likely follow a similar path.

GTA V received a PS4 and Xbox One upgrade on November 8, 2014. This was roughly a year after its initial release on the previous generation.

Its next-gen release saw massive success with many praising its improved graphics and new additions, such as a much-coveted first-person mode.

If GTA 6 wants to reach similar levels of success, Rockstar should aim to release an updated version of the game for the next console generation.
